Kevyn Adams comfortable with Devon Levi and UPL, but will Sabres add veteran goalie in free agency? -
BUFFALO – In each of the last two seasons, goalie Devon Levi cracked the NHL roster out of training camp only to be demoted by the Sabres in November. While the Sabres occasionally recalled Levi, 23, he mostly stayed in Rochester, emerging as the Americans’ backbone and one of the AHL’s elite netminders. Levi, having registered a 2.28 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in the minors, has made a strong case he’s ready to ... 2025 NHL Free Agency Open Thread -
We’re at a very interesting juncture of the off-season with the 2025 NHL Entry Draft now behind us and NHL Free Agency coming up. Free agency begins on Tuesday at noon ET with the NHL salary cap increasing $7.5 million to $95.5 million next season. That’s the largest season-to-season jump since the salary cap was implemented in 2005, giving teams more money to spend to upgrade their rosters. In tangible terms, that’s at least two decent players worth of cap room being added to the table. For the Buffalo Sabres, General Manager Kevin Adams made two trades leading up to and during the draft, both of which were of the cap clearing variety, moving out JJ Peterka and Connor Clifton, while adding three players who are all on much lower contracts. The next day or two will basically prove whether the fans’ growing suspicion that owner Terry Pegula is going to attempt to pinch pennies, or indeed he’s going to back Adams and spend to t

Noah Dobson and emerging from the rebuild mindset -
It has been quite a year since the last NHL Draft for the Montreal Canadiens. Twelve months ago they left Las Vegas with Ivan Demidov in their back pocket and looked poised to take a big step forward. The expectation around the team was that they were supposed to be “in the mix” for the playoffs even if they were to end up falling short of qualifying. The team made a splash by acquiring Patrik Laine, giving them a legitimate all-world shot to round out their top six and saw David Reinbacher make his full-time North American debut. Without rehashing the entire season, by the time things came to an end the Habs not only ended up in the mix, they ended up in the NHL playoffs. While the experience was short-lived, it was clear that the franchise was preparing to move into the next phase of their rebuilding plan heading into the 2025 off-season. The club had already added Demidov for the final run to the playoffs, they had old salary retentions coming off the books

Sabres pick David Bedkowski morphed from ‘soft’ rookie into tough prospect -
ORCHARD PARK – By his own admission, Buffalo Sabres prospect David Bedkowski arrived in the Ontario Hockey League as a “really soft” 15-year-old. The toughness that has become the 6-foot-4, 221-pound right-shot defenseman’s greatest asset was non-existent. “That wasn’t really part of my game at all,” Bedkowski said on a Zoom call Saturday after the Sabres selected him in the third round, 71st overall, in the NHL Draft. Buffalo Sabres Don’t Sleep on Bedkowski -
Big-checking defenseman will be a hit with fans The Buffalo Sabres ticked me off on Saturday, dealing away their 2nd round draft pick. Especially with several 1st round level players still on the board. Big, physical hockey players who play with an edge – that was the theme of Buffalo’s drafting this year. They had a primo opportunity to grab one of the best available. Alas, they made a deal with Pittsburgh instead that hopefully works out for the Sabres. Stay tuned on that one. The Blue and Gold found a rare gem (at least in these parts) in the 3rd round though. Meet David Bedkowski, a 6′ 4″ right shot defenseman who takes pride in his physical game. He loves to deliver bone rattling checks along the boards or a big open ice hit. Here is a quote from him on https://www.nhl.com/sabres “A big open-ice hit, it can change the course of a game, shift the momentum,” Bedkowski

A Plethora Of Hockey Notes -
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - The unnecessary move to decentralize the NHL draft was voted on by the current general managers. Now it’s time to vote again — and turn the draft back into what it used to be. The NHL is at its best when it sticks to nuance and history and convenience. When it tries to be what it’s not, as it did on Friday night, it winds up tripping all over itself. There was nothing more awkward watching from home than having newly drafted players talking to their general managers on video screens. The whole thing made me uncomfortable as someone who previously was a big fan of the all-teams-on-the-floor NHL draft. - If it didn’t cost much for the Red Wings to pick up goaltender John Gibson from Anaheim, it got me thinking: Why didn’t Edmonton make a deal for Gibson? - The Wings have missed the playoffs nine years in a row. They need to be aggressive this off-season. Buffalo has missed 14 in a row. The Sabres need to b

With the ninth overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres selected defenseman Radim Mrtka from the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds. Here’s what EliteProspects had to say in their NHL draft guide; “While Mrtka isn’t a particularly punishing player, he’s an active and aware defender. He scans for threats, ties them up, and rotates well. Though he lands the occasional big hit, his physical impact comes through his ability to absorb contact, win retrievals, and deny space. With possession, Mrtka’s no slouch, either. He makes tricky passes off the wall on retrievals, joins the rush, and manages space well at the top of the zone.” Mrtka started the year playing in his native Czechia, then made the jump to North American to play for

Buffalo Sabres Re-Sign Jack Quinn -
The Buffalo Sabres announced Friday evening that the team has re-signed forward Jack Quinn to a two-year contract, which runs through the 2026-27 season. The deal is worth $3.375 million AAV – a sizable raise, as Quinn’s expiring contract carried an AAV of $1.71 million in the last three years. Quinn’s relatively young NHL career has been plagued by injury in recent years. Prior to the 2023-24 season, Quinn suffered an Achilles injury that required surgery. That season also saw him suffer another lower-body injury, which also required surgery. After being drafted eighth overall in 2020, Quinn joined the Sabres for two games in the 2021-22 season before making the full-time jump to the NHL. Sabres notes: NHL Draft prospect Haoxi ‘Simon’ Wang left family in China to pursue hockey career in Toronto -
ORCHARD PARK – Five years ago, NHL Draft prospect Haoxi “Simon” Wang took a life-changing risk, leaving his family in China to pursue a hockey career in Toronto. Wang, who turns 18 on July 27, spoke little English and had no guarantees when he left Beijing. He was hardly a phenom. He simply loved hockey. His parents saw his devotion to the sport and allowed him to move 6,500 miles away to Canada. “I think ... 2025 NHL Draft – How To Watch, Draft Order & 1st Round Open Thread -
Are the Buffalo Sabres going to end up picking at 9, or will they make a move or two? The Buffalo Sabres have already been active in the trade market leading up to tonight’s NHL Entry Draft. General Manager Kevyn Adams moved wantaway winger JJ Peterka off to Utah Mammoth, picking up RHD Michael Kesselring and RW Josh Doan. There has been quite a bit of chatter about who else could be traded as the Sabres try to get into ‘win now’ mode by addressing gaps in the roster with NHL-ready players versus stockpiling picks and prospects as they have done over the last few years. Defenseman Bowen Byram wants a bigger role but finds himself behind Rasmus Dahlin, and could be an enticing trading chip especially if a veteran gritty top six center is available. Jack Quinn disappointed last year and could also become fuel for the fire, or if a team comes up with an adequate package for former #1 pick Owen Power, then GMKA might be tempted

2025 NHL Entry Draft: Preview, start time, TV schedule, and how to watch -
There hasn’t been a great deal of drama regarding which player is the top prospect this season. Matthew Schaefer began the season as a slight favourite, and despite his campaign being limited by illness and injury he showed enough to improve his stock while others who were regarded in similar esteem had their stumbles in 2024-25. At this point, it would be a surprise if the New York Islanders didn’t select him first overall. The process is going to be different this year as the NHL has gone to a decentralized format that no longer has all the teams’ representatives in the same place, but staying home to make their picks. It also means fewer prospects will be in attendance, so the typical routine of the prospects going to the stage to put on their new jerseys will have some breaks this season. How to watch Round 1 Date: Friday, June 2

The Last Big Draft Board -
DBTB – Welcome to NHL Draft Day. Tonight 32 kids will have their dream come true, which is amazing and something to celebrated, no matter what happens after tonight. As my kids get older and I see how their love for their favorite sports manifests itself, how easy it is to be distracted, how much work they’re willing to put in, how excited they get on the way to the games, practices, camps and fields, I have an even greater respect what these kids go through to be considered as 1st round draft choices in their chosen sport. So I tip my cap to every one of them, their coaches, teammates, families and friends. Having had teammates who played in the show, won Cups and all manner of titles from juniors to college to the NHL, it never struck me that much because I was in the middle of it. But now, able to look from afar to have some perspective on it, it’s a pretty amazing feat. Sorry for being sappy! &n

Michael Kesselring, Josh Doan thrilled for chance trade to Sabres offers -
When defenseman Michael Kesselring recently played alongside Sabres winger Tage Thompson with Team USA at the World Championship, he joked KeyBank Center in Buffalo was his favorite NHL arena. On Nov. 12, 2023 in Buffalo, Kesselring scored his first NHL goal for the Arizona Coyotes against, of all goalies, Devon Levi, his former college teammate at Northeastern. “So I can give him a little more crap about it a little bit more often now,” joked ... Thoughts on the Peterka Trade to Utah -
Late Wednesday night the Buffalo Sabres dealt seemingly disgruntled forward JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth. In some inner circles it was believed to be his agent in his ear behind all of this. Either way, Peterka is gone now and joins a growing list of players to have left Buffalo. A sad reality until this team starts winning again. In return, Buffalo has acquired Michael Kesselring, a solid 25 year old towering right shot defender. He is over 6’5″ and about 215 pounds. He looks like a good option to pair with Owen Power on Buffalo’s blue line. Kesselring had 29 points in 82 games last season and was a +4.
