With a logjam developing on the right side of Detroit’s defense, it’s fair to wonder exactly where Sandin Pellikka fits. But I think we need to look at the MUCH bigger picture. ASP just turned 21 in March and is entering only his second season in North America. He remains one of Detroit’s most intriguing young defensemen, and his offensive upside from the blue line could be enormous. Yes, there’s competition. Yes, there are areas of his game that still need to develop. On Aug. 13, 1946, Robert Earle Clarke was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He battled the odds, overcame diabetes, and became the face of the Philadelphia Flyers for the better part of the first half of the franchise’s roughly 60-year history. He’s also the only Flyers captain to lead the team to Stanley Cup, and leads the team in games (for now), assists, points, short-handed goals, and even plus/minus (+507). But for all of his greatness on the ice while playing for the club, there were also some miscues when he went from the ice to the front office. So, on the Hall of Famer’s 80th birthday, let’s look back at three of the best things Clarke did for the Flyers.
