Montreal Canadiens extend qualifying offers to five players -
One day before the NHL’s free agent period opens, there was one last item of business for the 32 NHL teams, and that was extending qualifying offers to their pending restricted free agents. https://twitter.com/CanadiensMTL/status/1939806205138137429 The Montreal Canadiens extended qualifying offers to five players: Jakub Dobeš, Sean Farrell, Jayden Struble, William Trudeau, and Cayden Primeau That means they retain their NHL rights, and can continue to negotiate without worrying about an open market. Some of the players can sign offer sheets, but that gives the team the right to match. It also means that Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, Xavier Simoneau, Gustav Lindström, and Noel Hoefenmayer become unrestricted free agents. This doesn’t necessarily mean that their time in the Canadiens organization comes to an

from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, The situation with Rasmus Andersson has some layers to it, to be sure. The 28-year-old right-shot top-four Calgary Flames defenseman doesn’t have a full no-trade clause (he has a modified one), but the 2026 unrestricted free agent’s ultimate hammer is that he controls which team he would be interested in extending with as part of a trade-and-sign scenario. And as of Monday, the team that tops his list, league sources told The Athletic, is the Vegas Golden Knights.... Heavy lifting: Contracts Sharks can absorb to reach cap floor -
The San Jose Sharks are heading into free agency with a lot of work to do just to reach the cap floor. The team has $51.41 million committed to players and needs to commit an additional $19.19 million to reach the $70.6 million floor. Some of that will be dished out in free agency, where it’s expected the Sharks will try to land a big-name free agent. Whether the team succeeds is another matter entirely. That said, one major free agent or even two isn’t going to get the team to the floor, which means the Sharks will also need to take on a few bad contracts to get something done. With that in mind, what contracts might the Sharks swallow that might make sense, and could those moves happen today to help other teams land free agency big fish? Matt Dumba The Dallas Stars need some cap room, and the Sharks could use another right-shot defenseman. Dumba has one more year on a contract that pays him $3.75 million, money that Dalla

Evaluating Mikael Granlund’s potential fit as the Canadiens’ second-line centre -
It’s been clear for a few years that the biggest hole in the Montreal Canadiens’ lineup is at the second-line centre position. Kent Hughes attempted to solve the problem immediately upon being hired by trading for Kirby Dach at the 2022 NHL Draft, and while that was looking like the answer early into a four-year contract, last season saw Dach struggle at the position with one of the worst goal differentials in the league at -29. There aren’t many fits at centre on the free-agent market this summer, and that’s especially true for a Habs team that is trying to assemble a young group of players to have a long window of Stanley Cup contention. Nevertheless, they need some type of solution after Nick Suzuki’s line, so the management team will need to explore the options available to be signed. One that appears to be a good fit for a club hoping to improve is Mikael Granlund. The 33-year-old centreman had two productive seasons with the n

Noah Dobson and emerging from the rebuild mindset -
It has been quite a year since the last NHL Draft for the Montreal Canadiens. Twelve months ago they left Las Vegas with Ivan Demidov in their back pocket and looked poised to take a big step forward. The expectation around the team was that they were supposed to be “in the mix” for the playoffs even if they were to end up falling short of qualifying. The team made a splash by acquiring Patrik Laine, giving them a legitimate all-world shot to round out their top six and saw David Reinbacher make his full-time North American debut. Without rehashing the entire season, by the time things came to an end the Habs not only ended up in the mix, they ended up in the NHL playoffs. While the experience was short-lived, it was clear that the franchise was preparing to move into the next phase of their rebuilding plan heading into the 2025 off-season. The club had already added Demidov for the final run to the playoffs, they had old salary retentions coming off the books

A Plethora Of Hockey Notes -
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - The unnecessary move to decentralize the NHL draft was voted on by the current general managers. Now it’s time to vote again — and turn the draft back into what it used to be. The NHL is at its best when it sticks to nuance and history and convenience. When it tries to be what it’s not, as it did on Friday night, it winds up tripping all over itself. There was nothing more awkward watching from home than having newly drafted players talking to their general managers on video screens. The whole thing made me uncomfortable as someone who previously was a big fan of the all-teams-on-the-floor NHL draft. - If it didn’t cost much for the Red Wings to pick up goaltender John Gibson from Anaheim, it got me thinking: Why didn’t Edmonton make a deal for Gibson? - The Wings have missed the playoffs nine years in a row. They need to be aggressive this off-season. Buffalo has missed 14 in a row. The Sabres need to b

Grading the 2025 Montreal Canadiens draft class -
With the 2025 NHL Entry Draft now complete, it is time to take a look at the Montreal Canadiens’ results therein, and how they fared at the first iteration of the league’s new decentralized selection. I’d like a word on that format first and foremost, because I think I speak for most hockey fans when I say that the production value was absolutely terrible. We were treated to far more Gary Bettman than most of us can stomach, a very poorly set up room with an interminable echo where prospects would meet their new management after being drafted, and a silly trade alert button that nobody asked for. Astonishingly bad TV that I personally would never watch if I wasn’t already a member of the NHL’s core audience that they know they’ll never lose. Rounds two through seven were far more palatable, at least, and that was where the Habs really did their work anyway. So, without further ado, here are my grades for each of the picks made

The fourth round of the NHL entry draft is a time for team to take some swings on undervalued players. EOTP’s 2025 Consensus NHL Draft Rankings -
The 2025 NHL Entry Draft begins on Friday, and EOTP has been keeping track of most of the rankings to come out ahead of the draft. Some rankings have more correlation to how the draft will unfold than others, and no rankings are perfect so we combined seven of the most respected draft rankings and used an average to get our own rankings. This is our 10th year doing this. Last year out of the 147 ranked players, 135 (91.8%) were drafted. Only three of the top 100 players were not drafted (57th-ranked Tomas Galvas, Daniil Ustenkov (82) and Alexander Zetterberg (84)). The correlation of the consensus ranking to draft selection was 0.7394, an increase from 2023. Of course, it’s never going to be an exact process. Outlets rank players based on how they feel the players will end up, not where they will be drafted so their goal is not the same as our goal. The goal of the Consensus rankings is to try to get a picture of how the talent is being evaluated

Noah Dobson’s underlying metrics show an improving 200-foot player -
When it comes to draft-day deals, Kent Hughes has gone four-for-four. And the fourth is his biggest move by far. Hours before the 2025 NHL Entry Draft was scheduled to kick off, the Canadiens’ general manager acquired restricted free agent Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders. Furthermore, Hughes was able to ink the 25-year-old Prince Edward Islander to an eight-year contract with an average annual value of $9.5 million, considerably under the $10- or $11-million values that had been bandied about. A significant move naturally invites significant scrutiny, and the spotlight on Dobson has grown in intensity because the young defenceman had been the subject of trade rumours since February. Moreover, young players with Dobso
