Noah Dobson and emerging from the rebuild mindset -
It has been quite a year since the last NHL Draft for the Montreal Canadiens. Twelve months ago they left Las Vegas with Ivan Demidov in their back pocket and looked poised to take a big step forward. The expectation around the team was that they were supposed to be “in the mix” for the playoffs even if they were to end up falling short of qualifying. The team made a splash by acquiring Patrik Laine, giving them a legitimate all-world shot to round out their top six and saw David Reinbacher make his full-time North American debut. Without rehashing the entire season, by the time things came to an end the Habs not only ended up in the mix, they ended up in the NHL playoffs. While the experience was short-lived, it was clear that the franchise was preparing to move into the next phase of their rebuilding plan heading into the 2025 off-season. The club had already added Demidov for the final run to the playoffs, they had old salary retentions coming off the books

Grading the 2025 Montreal Canadiens draft class -
With the 2025 NHL Entry Draft now complete, it is time to take a look at the Montreal Canadiens’ results therein, and how they fared at the first iteration of the league’s new decentralized selection. I’d like a word on that format first and foremost, because I think I speak for most hockey fans when I say that the production value was absolutely terrible. We were treated to far more Gary Bettman than most of us can stomach, a very poorly set up room with an interminable echo where prospects would meet their new management after being drafted, and a silly trade alert button that nobody asked for. Astonishingly bad TV that I personally would never watch if I wasn’t already a member of the NHL’s core audience that they know they’ll never lose. Rounds two through seven were far more palatable, at least, and that was where the Habs really did their work anyway. So, without further ado, here are my grades for each of the picks made

K’Andre Miller Is A Trade Chip For The New York Rangers -
from Mollie Walker of the New York Post, Now that Drury opened up some cap space by trading Chris Kreider to Anaheim and decided to send this year’s 12th pick to Pittsburgh to complete the J.T. Miller trade — instead of deferring the transfer to 2026 — the rest of the Rangers’ offseason plans hinge on restricted free agent K’Andre Miller. It’s become increasingly clear the Rangers aren’t willing to commit to Miller long term. That classifies the 25-year-old defenseman as one of the organization’s top trade chips as it heads into a weekend that is sure to be filled with plenty of action around the NHL. Whether Drury can fetch a first-rounder for Miller is yet to be seen, as is whether the Rangers’ head honcho believes a Round 1 selection would be worth it in this draft class. Miller is eligible to receive an offer sheet when the free agency window opens Tuesday, which could become a factor in the Rangers’ timeline. It would presuma

The Golden Knights signed Reilly Smith to a one-year contract extension worth $2 million, The Athletic’s Chris Johnston reported on Wednesday. If Connor McDavid Doesn't Re-Sign With The Edmonton Oilers -
from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, IF MCDAVID DOESN'T RE-SIGN with the Oilers, it would be an unprecedented moment in the history of NHL free agency. Never before has a generational talent -- with multiple MVP awards and scoring titles to his credit -- reached unrestricted free agency in his prime. There might not be a comparative moment in North American professional sports since LeBron James and "The Decision" in 2010 -- although given what fans and players have been chanting about McDavid after the Panthers' second Stanley Cup win over Edmonton, one assumes McDavid won't be taking his talents to South Beach. With Stanley Cup contention as his goal, the pool of teams with whom McDavid would consider signing is limited. There's been speculation about the Ontario native having a homecoming with the Toronto Maple Leafs, still seeking their first Stanley Cup since 1967; that he could join former Oilers GM Ken Holland with the Los Angel
