While the captain holds an official title, the reality is that many teams rely on a group of leaders to lead the team, on the ice, in the room, and in the tough moments. The NHL is filled with players who exemplify the traits of a captain: accountability, sacrifice, consistency, and inspiration, even if they’ve never officially worn the “C.” Legends like Bobby Orr, Pavel Datsyuk, and Guy Lafleur never captained their teams, yet their legacy and influence are undeniable. Today, several current players fall into that same category: elite competitors, foundational pieces of their franchises, and natural leaders, just without the title. Here are seven current NHL stars who’ve never officially been named captain but absolutely fit the bill. Nath

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – July 18, 2025 -
The Ducks avoid arbitration with Lukas Dostal, the Canucks trade Dakota Joshua to the Maple Leafs, Yegor Chinakhov requests a trade from the Blue Jackets, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines. NHL.COM: The Anaheim Ducks avoided salary arbitration with Lukas Dostal, signing the 25-year-old goaltender to a five-year contract with an average annual value of $6.5 million. SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s a significant increase for Dostal, who earned an annual cap hit of $812,500 on his previous deal. It raised some eyebrows on social media, but he earned it by outplaying John Gibson for the starter’s job, resulting in the latter’s recent trade to the Detroit Red Wings. Anaheim Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal (NHL Images). Dostal is a good goalie on a rebuilding team. Eric Stephens of The Athletic pointed out that his analytics are better than his traditional stats, with 14.3 goals saved above expectation. Friday Poll: Which young player will take the next step? -
Brunicke wants to be in that room by the time Pittsburgh opens its regular season at the New York Rangers on Oct. 7. “As far as my mindset and my play, my goal is to stay here this year,” Brunicke told NHL.com on the first day of prospect development camp. “So, I’m going to do whatever I can to make that happen.” He’ll have a shot. Brunicke made an impression at training camp last year, just after being selected in the second round (No. 44) of the 2024 NHL Draft. In his first camp, Brunicke did well enough to work alongside defenseman Marcus Pettersson for a bit before being sent back to Kamloops of the Western Hockey League. AD To some, that would have been a surprise. Brunicke wasn’t projected to be picked that high. He’s now considered one of the Penguins’ more promising young defensemen, alongside Owen Pickering (selected No. 21 in the 2022 NHL Draft). Brunicke didn’t care if he was considered a reach. “Just kind of ignore it,” Brunicke said. “You’re going to g

Which NHL teams improved the most this offseason? Ranking all 32 -
From most value added to least, here’s how each team has changed this summer. >Out: Emil Heineman, Logan Mailloux, David SavardIf you’re a Canadiens fan, it’s time to get excited. Only one team has improved more over the last summer externally and it’s likely that few teams will improve more internally, given the collective age of Montreal’s roster.AdvertisementThat doesn’t necessarily mean the Canadiens will improve over last year’s finish, but it does mean they are far less likely to regress with significantly more substance behind their results. The big get is Noah Dobson, who has the potential to be Lane Hutson’s Devon Toews. Dobson is a true top-pair defenseman, someone who adds tremendous upside to Montreal’s back end with his puck-moving ability. He’s a substantial get on his own, but the fact that it also means no more David Savard almost doubles the joy. Between the two, it’s a 16-goal swing. It’s a similar effect in giving up Emil Heineman for Dobson, and then trading for Zack

San Jose Sharks sign depth goaltender Jakub Skarek -
The San Jose Sharks added to the team’s goaltending depth on July 10, signing 25-year-old Jakub Skarek to a one-year deal worth $775,000. Skarek was not offered a new contract by the New York Islanders when his most recent deal ended and looked like he was headed to Finland to play hockey until General Manager Mike Grier made the call. Skarek fills what Grier felt was a gap in the Sharks’ goaltending. When asked during his free agency conference call why he allowed goaltender Georgi Romanov to enter free agency, Grier said he was looking for someone with a little more experience to play at the AHL level and that’s what he gets in Skarek. “Jakub has a plethora of professional experience in net at just 25 years old,” said Grier.

Sharks trade for Ryan Reaves -
As has been rumored for a few days now, the San Jose Sharks have started to clear out the log jam on defense, just not in the way that fans ever would have expected. General Manager Mike Grier announced on July 10 that the team had traded defenseman Henry Thrun to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Ryan Reaves. It’s a player-for-player trade with no other players or picks exchanging hands. Thrun was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks in 2023 for a 2024 third-round pick (Maxim Masse). He played in 119 games for the Sharks between 2023-25 and had 25 points (5 G, 20 A). The trade clears out a left-handed defenseman who has fallen down the Sharks’ depth chart with free agent acquisitions and the emergence of players like Luca Cagnoni and Sam Dickinson, the latter of whom has the potential to make the team out of the training camp. What does Reaves bring to the Sharks? Reaves has one year left on
