Sabres sign Alex Lyon, make trade and add depth as free agency opens -
What exactly will goalie Alex Lyon’s role be with the Buffalo Sabres? Right now, Lyon, their most significant signing on Tuesday, the first day of free agency, is likely penciled in as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s backup. But what if Luukkonen, 26, struggles like he did last season? Late in the year, veteran James Reimer took over, keeping the Finn on the bench as he enjoyed a career-best stretch. The Sabres are under enormous pressure to win ... Read the full article The post Sabres sign Alex Lyon, make trade and add depth as free agency opens first appeared on Buffalo Hockey Beat.

The Buffalo Sabres today traded forward Sam Lafferty to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2026. One of the better players from the Buffalo Sabres’ latest doomed season, Ryan McLeod was tendered a qualifying offer which he has now signed. The speedy middle-six forward has signed a four-year deal with an AAV of $5 million, a very reasonable deal that secures his immediate future. Coming to the Sabres from Edmonton Oilers in a trade for 2022 first rounder Matt Savoie, the 25-year-old was a pleasant surprise for all the fans who had him pegged as a fourth liner. McLeod scored 20 goals and 53 points in all, stepping up to the top six when injuries called for it while playing a key role in the penalty kill, with his pace and passing providing the team with an attacking boost.

Per Elliotte Friedman, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Mason Geertsen to a two-year contract, reportedly worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $425,000 at the AHL level. He’s spent most of his professional career in the AHL, aside from 25 NHL games with the New Jersey Devils a few seasons ago. In November 2024, Geertsen released a statement announcing that was in remission after previously being diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in November 2023. Geetsen was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche with the 93rd overall pick in 2013. 2025 NHL Free Agency Open Thread -
We’re at a very interesting juncture of the off-season with the 2025 NHL Entry Draft now behind us and NHL Free Agency coming up. Free agency begins on Tuesday at noon ET with the NHL salary cap increasing $7.5 million to $95.5 million next season. That’s the largest season-to-season jump since the salary cap was implemented in 2005, giving teams more money to spend to upgrade their rosters. In tangible terms, that’s at least two decent players worth of cap room being added to the table. For the Buffalo Sabres, General Manager Kevin Adams made two trades leading up to and during the draft, both of which were of the cap clearing variety, moving out JJ Peterka and Connor Clifton, while adding three players who are all on much lower contracts. The next day or two will basically prove whether the fans’ growing suspicion that owner Terry Pegula is going to attempt to pinch pennies, or indeed he’s going to back Adams and spend to t

Noah Dobson and emerging from the rebuild mindset -
It has been quite a year since the last NHL Draft for the Montreal Canadiens. Twelve months ago they left Las Vegas with Ivan Demidov in their back pocket and looked poised to take a big step forward. The expectation around the team was that they were supposed to be “in the mix” for the playoffs even if they were to end up falling short of qualifying. The team made a splash by acquiring Patrik Laine, giving them a legitimate all-world shot to round out their top six and saw David Reinbacher make his full-time North American debut. Without rehashing the entire season, by the time things came to an end the Habs not only ended up in the mix, they ended up in the NHL playoffs. While the experience was short-lived, it was clear that the franchise was preparing to move into the next phase of their rebuilding plan heading into the 2025 off-season. The club had already added Demidov for the final run to the playoffs, they had old salary retentions coming off the books

Big-checking defenseman will be a hit with fans The Buffalo Sabres ticked me off on Saturday, dealing away their 2nd round draft pick. Especially with several 1st round level players still on the board. Big, physical hockey players who play with an edge – that was the theme of Buffalo’s drafting this year. They had a primo opportunity to grab one of the best available. Alas, they made a deal with Pittsburgh instead that hopefully works out for the Sabres. Stay tuned on that one. A Plethora Of Hockey Notes -
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - The unnecessary move to decentralize the NHL draft was voted on by the current general managers. Now it’s time to vote again — and turn the draft back into what it used to be. The NHL is at its best when it sticks to nuance and history and convenience. When it tries to be what it’s not, as it did on Friday night, it winds up tripping all over itself. There was nothing more awkward watching from home than having newly drafted players talking to their general managers on video screens.
