Yegor Chinakhov has requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Could he be the ‘skilled player’ the Capitals are looking for this offseason? -
Washington Capitals general manager Chris Patrick was honest about his desire to add a “skilled player” to the team’s lineup during his end-of-season media availability in May. After trying to achieve the goal in free agency with Nikolaj Ehlers and missing out, the Capitals are believed to be a team to watch on the trade

NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – July 18, 2025 -
The Ducks avoid arbitration with Lukas Dostal, the Canucks trade Dakota Joshua to the Maple Leafs, Yegor Chinakhov requests a trade from the Blue Jackets, and more in today’s NHL Morning Coffee Headlines. NHL.COM: The Anaheim Ducks avoided salary arbitration with Lukas Dostal, signing the 25-year-old goaltender to a five-year contract with an average annual value of $6.5 million. SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s a significant increase for Dostal, who earned an annual cap hit of $812,500 on his previous deal. It raised some eyebrows on social media, but he earned it by outplaying John Gibson for the starter’s job, resulting in the latter’s recent trade to the Detroit Red Wings. Anaheim Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal (NHL Images). Dostal is a good goalie on a rebuilding team. Eric Stephens of The Athletic pointed out that his analytics are better than his traditional stats, with 14.3 goals saved above expectation. He backstopped the Ducks to their first 80-point season since 2018-19.

Frozen Tools Forensics: Regression and Rebound Candidates in the Metro Division Including Barzal, Svechnikov, Protas, and More -
This week we are returning to our division reviews and identifying candidates to bounce back and candidates to avoid on draft day. We have already reviewed the Pacific and Central Divisions, so today we move on to the Metro. As a reminder here is a little context setting from the original article. These are certainly not the end all be all of player evaluation but do tend to flag players who are likely to see a different point pace in the future. Before jumping into the players, let's do a quick refresher on what these stats tell us. We use team shooting percentage to get an idea of how many points are being scored while a player is on the ice. We use five on five because that is the largest game state for players. Power-play points count jus

Which NHL teams improved the most this offseason? Ranking all 32 -
From most value added to least, here’s how each team has changed this summer. >Out: Emil Heineman, Logan Mailloux, David SavardIf you’re a Canadiens fan, it’s time to get excited. Only one team has improved more over the last summer externally and it’s likely that few teams will improve more internally, given the collective age of Montreal’s roster.AdvertisementThat doesn’t necessarily mean the Canadiens will improve over last year’s finish, but it does mean they are far less likely to regress with significantly more substance behind their results. The big get is Noah Dobson, who has the potential to be Lane Hutson’s Devon Toews. Dobson is a true top-pair defenseman, someone who adds tremendous upside to Montreal’s back end with his puck-moving ability. He’s a substantial get on his own, but the fact that it also means no more David Savard almost doubles the joy. Between the two, it’s a 16-goal swing. It’s a similar effect in giving up Emil Heineman for Dobson, and then trading for Zack

Champion returns, championship final starts -
A former Gagarin Cup-winning head coach is back in the KHL, while the inaugural 3x3 championship reaches the final phase. Read on for more of last week?s main stories. Bob?s back Bob Hartley is back in the KHL as newly-appointed head coach at Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. The Canadian, 64, previously worked with Avangard from 2018-2022, winning the Gagarin Cup in 2021. In total, he coached 294 games with Hawks, winning 177. Hartley also has a Stanley Cup, won with Colorado in 2001. When Hartley left Omsk, he announced he was retiring from coaching and has spent the last three seasons doing media work. But the chance to take over at the defending Gagarin Cup champion proved too tempting to resist.
