San Jose Sharks sign depth goaltender Jakub Skarek -
The San Jose Sharks added to the team’s goaltending depth on July 10, signing 25-year-old Jakub Skarek to a one-year deal worth $775,000. Skarek was not offered a new contract by the New York Islanders when his most recent deal ended and looked like he was headed to Finland to play hockey until General Manager Mike Grier made the call. Skarek fills what Grier felt was a gap in the Sharks’ goaltending. When asked during his free agency conference call why he allowed goaltender Georgi Romanov to enter free agency, Grier said he was looking for someone with a little more experience to play at the AHL level and that’s what he gets in Skarek. “Jakub has a plethora of professional experience in net at just 25 years old,” said Grier.

Hockey Talk In July -
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, - The Leafs had nine seasons of Marner, Auston Matthews and William Nylander and seven seasons of John Tavares without having a playoff run of consequence. What was accomplished? If this hasn’t been a golden opportunity lost, I don’t know what it’s been. - If you’re handing out a Stanley Cup in July, you can give it again to the Florida Panthers right now. But here’s the thing. Winning the off-season rarely translates to winning in June. The Panthers are the easy and obvious choice to win next season, especially after re-signing Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and Brad Marchand, but there’s always a human element involved in all of this. And any time something looks too obvious, it often goes the other way. - I don’t like the idea of an 84-game NHL season starting in 2026 because it distorts future 50-goal seasons. Alex Ovechkin has had nine 50-goal seasons in his career. Three other times he came close to 50. W

The quieter opening of this year’s free agency period — at least at 1901 W. Based on the relative lack of veteran bodies acquired this offseason, it seems like the 2025-26 season is one where we’re going to get the most comprehensive look yet at this team’s potential future — and that’s intriguing! But a closer look at what’s coming up the pipeline in the next few seasons offers a little cause for concern.
