Goalie Help: Can We Afford to do Nothing? There are no two ways about it, the Buffalo Sabres’ goaltending failed the team this past season. The defense did them no favors either but the men between the pipes were the big letdown. Devon Levi started the year in Buffalo but his early season struggles just continued to snowball. He looked nothing like the kid out of college beating the formidable Rangers twice two years ago. He looked off, he was slow to react, he looked small. He looked….well, not quite ready. He was soon demoted to Rochester which turned out to be the best thing for him. Levi had a phenomenal year with the Amerks, posting a 2.20 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. His development has reached a new stage at this time as he leads Rochester through the playoffs. Meanwhile, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had an OK start to the year. Don't Doubt The Florida Panthers -
from Greg Cote of the Miami Herald, So the Florida Panthers skate past rival Tampa Bay 4-1 in the NHL playoffs’ first round, and what? You thought this would be easy? That other teams were going to curtsy and bow to the reigning Stanley Cup champions? Toronto has not won a Stanley Cup (or played in the Final) since 1967. No team in this postseason is hungry like that. The Maple Leafs haven’t even gotten past the second round since 2002. And if the Panthers get past this round despite Monday’s Game 1 loss, the Washington Capitals and all-time goals leader Alex Ovechkin might be waiting.... We haven’t seen this in awhile: the Panthers getting handled, dominated for much of the game before rallying late but still losing Monday, 5-4, as a 4-1 game turned into a late thriller. This was the NHL’s only game this night. North America was watching. It was Toronto, the team with the most wins in the Eastern Conference and a No. 1 seed, vs.

Replace Jared Bednar? -
from Sean Keeler of the Denver Post, Stan Kroenke doesn’t own the Avalanche. The Dallas Stars do. Whiny Pete DeBoer does. Still. After all these years. After all those trades. After all those draft picks. If not now, when?... Jared Bednar has been a tremendous servant to this organization, the kind of stand-up guy who leaves a room better than he found it. But this Whiny Pete thing is real. And it’s not going away unless one of them does first. Bednar’s 0-4 against DeBoer in playoff series with the Avs. He’s now 0-2 against the guy in Game 7s. The Florida Panthers Are Next For The Toronto Maple Leafs -
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, This wasn’t a giant breakthrough for the Maple Leafs, this 4-2 Game 6 Battle of Ontario winning victory over the Ottawa Senators, winning the series 4-2. This was a series they were expected to win, needed to win. The game was close Thursday night and the series with the Ottawa Senators was close right to the final minute. The Leafs are moving on now to the second round of the playoffs and as difficult a series as this was to get through, next round is an entirely different level. Against the Stanley Cup champions. Against the team that just blew out the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. Against a team that kind of blew out a lesser version of these Leafs in the second round of playoffs just two years ago. This is a different Leaf team now, a better version.
