The Blackhawks have a preseason hockey game in 35 days, but there’s one more item on the SCH summer agenda before we can turn our attention to the 2026-27 season. It’s Top 25 Under 25 time. Once again, our critically acclaimed series is back for its summer appearance with the usual methodology of individual ballots submitted by the SCH staff, combined with a collective ballot from the Second City Hockey community — which we’re doing again! — to tally our top 25 players and a handful of honorable mentions. With the NHL continuing to talk about expansion, the Blackhawks might need to start considering who they might protect in a future expansion draft. As talks progress around potential ownership groups in Texas and potentially Atlanta, Arizona or Quebec, the Blackhawks are still trying to build the core of a competitive team. That won’t make things easy if/when the time comes to decide which players are deemed “untouchable.” Which brings us to today’s Blackhawks history lesson. Since the Gary Bettman-led NHL started to aggressively expand 35 years ago, the Blackhawks have been forced to make similar choices. There have been some tough decisions made. And, in one instance, there was a crazy game played with a goaltender in net for Chicago who wouldn’t appear in another NHL game. Welcome to the second week of August, Blackhawks fans! There will be kids (and teachers) heading back to school this week. There will be football and cross country and soccer and golf (and whatever other sports happen in the fall) practices happening. Life is starting to turn the page to the fall, which means were’ that much closer to putting on jeans and a sweatshirt and heading to the rink to see hockey. And I’m here for that! Ben Pope gave us a nice piece over the weekend that looks at how Blackhawks center Anton Frondell is preparing for his first full pro season on this side of the Atlantic. A lot of questions recently in the comments here and on social media about the future of Kevin Korchinski with the Blackhawks, so a question from me: what happens if he out-performs Sam Rinzel in training camp? I don’t think that’s a crazy potential scenario; it could happen. Ian Cole was brought in because he has experience playing both sides, and Korchinski spent a fair amount of time on the right side in Rockford last year. I’ll go a step further: if Rinzel spends some time in Rockford this coming season, I wouldn’t be overwhelmingly disappointed and I wouldn’t consider that a career-ending, trajectory-ruining move for the player or the organization. For all of the reasons I have said Korchinski isn’t a finished product — Rinzel isn’t, either. Also: Rinzel can go to the AHL without requiring waivers; Korchinski (and Ethan Del Mastro) need to c

You usually don’t find those guys falling to the 139th overall selection. But Shaw became that guy, authoring some iconic moments that included a header and loving shin pads. He emerged as a guy the Blackhawks needed at a time when they didn’t have a lot coming up thru the organization to help sustain their core.
