Diagnosing the Chicago Blackhawks’ defense from last season is easy: they were bad. The Hawks finished 31st in 5-on-5 expected goals against and 30th in actual 5-on-5 goals against (only slightly improved thanks to Spencer Knight). The blue line was young, and Jeff Blashill’s man-on-man defense probably didn’t help (as we’ll see, it didn’t). Do we really have to look under the hood to check out the ugly details? No. But doing so briefly keeps us aware and helps us paint a picture as to which trends fall on the shoulders of the players and which land on the coaching staff. Let’s start with the players. The Defensemen Sam Rinzel started the season looking overwhelmed in his own end. This earned him a trip to Rockford, where he scored 14 points (2 G, 12 A) in 23 games played. According to Hockey Stats’ model, he ranked in the 25th percentile in even-strength defense during his 54 games played in Chicago. While w

So… as far as “good” starts to games go, this wasn’t it for the Blackhawks. Bobby Brink gave the visitors a 1-0 lead only 15 seconds after puck drop. The good news: that lead didn’t last nine minutes before the Blackhawks were able to tie the game coming off a strong penalty kill. After 40 minutes, the Blackhawks had a 2-1 lead. The game got increasingly physical later in the period; there were a few big hits from both teams after a cheap shot in the middle of the ice got everyone’s attention. The Blackhawks scored 24 seconds into the third period to extend their lead to two. That lasted less than four minutes before Minnesota countered. The Wild then tied the game seven minutes later. There are now only four preseason games, which gives players a limited amount of time to earn roster spots. And the shorter time frame has put some teams into tough positions with players who are still either restricted free agents (Adam Fantilli, Alexander Nikishin) or have demanded a trade (Connor Hellebuyck, Dylan Larkin, Kirill Marchenko). Thankfully, the Chicago Blackhawks don’t have anyone begging for a trade, and their roster appears to be pretty close to being set. The first Blackhawks game of the regular season is now just eight days away, and preparation for that continues on Monday as Chicago hosts the Minnesota Wild for a preseason game. Over the weekend, a trio of prospects were returned to their junior teams, most notably 2026 second-round pick Ryan Roobroeck, so the training camp roster now stands at 47 players. Of those 47, the ones expected to still be on the NHL roster next week make up the lineup for this evening, as is often the case with preseason home games. There is one exception, though, as those expecting a glimpse of No. 88 in a Blackhawks uniform for the first time in three years will have to wait a little longer.

Unfortunately, it came off the stick of Rieger Lorenz, who got behind Derrick Pouliot and beat Arvid Söderblom. The Hawks were able to come back and tie the game at little more than four minutes later, but went to the room being out-shot 14-4 after 20 minutes.
