Although fans wanted Allan to play a tougher game, that wasn't his style. The Rangers failed to give Stanley enough time to mature and foolishly traded him to Chicago on Thanksgiving Day eve, 1954. So good was Al that he's now in the Hall of Fame and winner of four Stanley Cup rings – as a Maple Leaf.

The Chicago Blackhawks kick off a back-to-back set Thursday night, continuing their East Coast swing with a stop in Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. Like the New York Islanders on Tuesday, it’s been since late December that the Blackhawks last faced the Flyers, but it’s been more of a downhill slide for the team from Philly over the past few months. Back when the two teams faced off before Christmas, the Flyers were sitting second in the Metropolitan Division and in the Eastern Conference but are currently sitting five points out of the playoff spot. Following a loss on Friday night, the Chicago Blackhawks host the Nashville Predators on Sunday afternoon — a team that was supposed to be at the bottom of the standings, but has snuck their way back into the playoff conversation. The Predators are currently in the second wild card spot with 73 points. That’s right: even though Nashville was supposed to be hanging out in the basement of the league alongside the Blackhawks, they’ve won three straight, have a 5-4-1 record in their last 10 games, and are making things difficult for the Pacific Division teams fighting for a wild card spot: the Los Angeles Kings (72 points), Seattle Kraken (71), and the San Jose Sharks (70). A part of Nashville’s recent success is positive regression towards the mean in shooting percentage. On the season, the Preds have been shooting at 8.48 percent at 5-on-5 — ranked 27th overall. Since the Blackhawks last saw the Islanders at the end of December, their points percentage has ticked up slightly from .590 to .599, but they’ve still slid in the standings, going from third in the Metropolitan Division to just outside the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Detroit Red Wings currently hold a razor-thin edge at .600, which really just underscores how competitive the East has been this season: even maintaining a solid pace hasn’t guaranteed anything. Not only is the team still a playoff contender, though its chances are dwindling dramatically, but the Sharks are also very much a lottery contender, putting the team in a very interesting position heading into the final few weeks of the season. After I clocked out for the week from my full time gig, I decided to spend a bit of time looking to see what the likelihood is the Winnipeg Jets will use their final 14 remaining games to move up or down in the standings. The recent losses to the Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins have made a playoff bid even more unlikely, yet the True Northers are still only 5 points back of the Los Angeles Kings for the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. However, with three more clubs between Winnipeg and a playoff berth, there are many other contenders for the 8th spot. I will dive more into the chances for the Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, or San Jose Sharks ousting the Kings for the post-season later, but lets just say that Los Angeles has by far the easiest schedule left to play…so they have a HUGE advantage. With the surprising win on Saturday over the league leading Colorado Avalanche, the Winnipeg Jets have managed to pull within 6 points of the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. That spot is currently being held by the San Jose Sharks, who have played 1 less game than the True Northers, and our club still needs to pass 4 other franchises in standings before they could grab that last post-season berth. So there is a lot of work to be done with only 17 more contests left in the regular season. However, since there are 5 teams with 2 or less points ahead of them in the standings….our hockey team could significant diminish the value of their upcoming 1st round draft pick over the remainder of the schedule. The National Hockey League had a light schedule for Friday, with only two games on the books…yet both outcomes had an impact on our franchise. With the St. Louis Blues’ overtime win against the Edmonton Oilers, the Winnipeg Jets fell from 27th to 28th in the standings and the Los Angeles Kings victory over the New York Islanders extended the gap to the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot to 7 points.
