Orlov Offers Winning Wisdom Amidst Sharks’ Losing Streak (+) -
ST. LOUIS — Dmitry Orlov has been an unappreciated leader in the San Jose Sharks’ surprising season. The veteran defenseman is also one of just four Sharks players who have won a Stanley Cup. Orlov hoisted the Cup in 2018 with the Washington Capitals. “It’s not easy. It’s a mind-set,” he said. “If you want […] The post Orlov Offers Winning Wisdom Amidst Sharks’ Losing Streak (+) appeared first on San Jose Hockey Now.

Run Right Back: Predators 3, Blackhawks 2 (OT) -
The Chicago Blackhawks lost to the Nashville Predators 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon, a game that helped Nashville solidify its hold on the second wildcard spot. Nick Lardis opened the scoring 4:34 into the second period following a 2-on-1 rush with Frank Nazar. The play was initiated by a pass from Tyler Bertuzzi in the defensive zone, and Lardis’s pass to Nazar went off Nicolas Hague’s stick and into the net. Canadiens vs. Hurricanes Top Six Minutes: Montreal wins season series with Carolina -
First period Josh Anderson is back in the lineup, but his first shift doesn’t last very long as he gets sent off for interference a second after Phillip Danault won a defensive-zone faceoff. Nikolaj Ehlers, the hottest goal-scorer for the Hurricanes, tries to send a pass to Seth Jarvis at the top of the crease, but instead Mike Matheson deflects the puck behind Jakub Dobeš in his attempt to cut off the pass. The puck gets behind Lane Hutson and Taylor Hall turns it into a breakaway. Dobeš comes up with an important save to keep the deficit from growing. It’s all Carolina in the opening minutes. Now the Canadiens are getting into the offensive zone but can’t work the puck off the boards. One step at a time I suppose. Matheson has his stick ripped out of his hands on a Hurricanes zone entry. Oliver Kapanen comes over to help win the puck battle, but ends up slinging the puck toward his own

Arber Xhekaj: How a unicorn can get more regular sightings -
While few players get the Bell Centre going like Arber Xhekaj can, it hasn’t been a banner season for the 25-year-old defenceman. Xhekaj’s story is amazing: undrafted as a teen when he was eligible for the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft in 2017, he worked his way up only to go undrafted in the NHL draft both in 2020 and 2021. Yet his play earned him an invite to the Montreal Canadiens’ development camp in 2021, where he impressed and promptly signed an entry-level deal. His last year of Junior hockey included a trade to his hometown Hamilton Bulldogs, an OHL championship, and being named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team. Jumping straight to the NHL for a rebuilding Canadiens team the following season, Xhekaj was part of a rookie-heavy defensive group on a bad team. They struggled, but progress was visible throughout the season. The following season, Xhekaj spent some time in the American Hockey League to work on his

Sharks Playoff/Lottery Hopes March 25, 2026 -
The San Jose Sharks are swimming in some uncharted waters. Not only is the team still a playoff contender, though its chances are dwindling dramatically, but the Sharks are also very much a lottery contender, putting the team in a very interesting position heading into the final few weeks of the season. As Sharks fans, that means there are two races to watch this time around. The race for the playoffs and the race to see who will have the best odds of picking first overall in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. Playoff Race Update It was a busy night for the contenders. As we know, the Nashville Predators continued to show a veteran strength, winning the team’s fifth straight game 6-3 over the Sharks. The Predators also gained ground on the Utah Mammoth, the current holders of the first wild card spot. The Mammoth lost in regulation to the Edmonton Oilers 5-2. And around the league, no one did the Sharks any favors. The Florida Panthers allowed the

GM #70: Winnipeg Jets @ New York Rangers -
Another very early game on Sunday has led to an abbreviated preview yet again….. WPG Jets @ NY Rangers Start Time: 11 am Central – Madison Square Garden Winnipeg (28-29-12) is in 27th place in the NHL with 68 points on the season, scoring 196 Goals For (tied for 24th) and allowing 217 Goals Against (tied for 19th). Mark Scheifele leads the Jets with 31 goals, 52 assists, and 83 points. Kyle Connor is tied for the goal scoring lead as well, while Gabriel Vilardi is 5 back with 26 goals. New York (28-33-8) has the 29th best record in the league with 64 points, scoring 196 Goals For (tied for 24th) and allowing 221 Goals Against (tied for 22nd). Mika Zibanejad leads the Rangers with 29 goals, 37 assists, and 66 points this year.

GM #67: Nashville Predators @ Winnipeg Jets -
Too busy today to complete a full Winnipeg Jets’ preview for tonight’s game, so here is an abbreviated version… NSH Predators @ WPG Jets Start Time: 7 pm Central – Canada Life Centre Winnipeg (28-28-10) is in 27th place in the NHL with 66 points on the season, scoring 188 Goals For (26th) and allowing 202 Goals Against (11th). Mark Scheifele leads the Jets with 31 goals, 51 assists, and 82 points. Kyle Connor is tied for the goal scoring lead as well. Nashville (29-28-9) is in 26th place in the NHL with 67 points on the season, scoring 195 Goals For (22nd) and allowing 225 Goals Against (27th). Ryan O’Reilly leads the Predators with 39 assists & 61 points, while Steven Stamkos has the most goals scored (31). Here is ho

GM #65: Colorado Avalanche @ Winnipeg Jets -
The National Hockey League had a light schedule for Friday, with only two games on the books…yet both outcomes had an impact on our franchise. With the St. Louis Blues’ overtime win against the Edmonton Oilers, the Winnipeg Jets fell from 27th to 28th in the standings and the Los Angeles Kings victory over the New York Islanders extended the gap to the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot to 7 points. So the True Northers fell back on a night they weren’t even playing…….and now they have to face the league leading Colorado Avalanche to try to restore their post-season hopes. The Avs have been the cream of the NHL this season, amassing a whopping 97 points and are pace for a total of 124 for the full campaign, which is 8 more than the President Trophy winning Jets had last year. The two franchises could not be more different this season…. Winnipeg (26-28-10) will be entering the action on a 2 game losing ski

GM #66: St. Louis Blues @ Winnipeg Jets -
With the surprising win on Saturday over the league leading Colorado Avalanche, the Winnipeg Jets have managed to pull within 6 points of the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. That spot is currently being held by the San Jose Sharks, who have played 1 less game than the True Northers, and our club still needs to pass 4 other franchises in standings before they could grab that last post-season berth. So there is a lot of work to be done with only 17 more contests left in the regular season. After effectively stifling the high powered Avs’ offense for large chunks of yesterday’s contest, Winnipeg will have another difficult test this afternoon when the streaking St. Louis Blues visit. The Central Division team has been excellent since the Olympic break concluded (7-1-1), yet they remain near the bottom of the NHL standings. Coming into today’s action, both the Jets & Blues are tied for the league’s 4th worst reco

The Lottery Race: Where Will the Jets End Up? -
After I clocked out for the week from my full time gig, I decided to spend a bit of time looking to see what the likelihood is the Winnipeg Jets will use their final 14 remaining games to move up or down in the standings. The recent losses to the Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins have made a playoff bid even more unlikely, yet the True Northers are still only 5 points back of the Los Angeles Kings for the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. However, with three more clubs between Winnipeg and a playoff berth, there are many other contenders for the 8th spot. I will dive more into the chances for the Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, or San Jose Sharks ousting the Kings for the post-season later, but lets just say that Los Angeles has by far the easiest schedule left to play…so they have a HUGE advantage. Before I go on with what I discovered, here is how the bottom of National Hockey League’s standings looked before action got unde

GM #71: Vegas Golden Knights @ Winnipeg Jets -
Up until now, the Jets have stubbornly remained in the wildcard fight, routinely picking up at least one point (only outright lost 4 of their past 16 contests). Despite Winnipeg often adding points to their year total, they actually have only managed to move from the 5th worst record to the 7th. However, since there are 5 teams with 2 or less points ahead of them in the standings….our hockey team could significant diminish the value of their upcoming 1st round draft pick over the remainder of the schedule. Yet Tuesday begins a tough stretch for the Winnipeg Jets, as they will have four games against clubs that have historically caused the True Northers problems…..the Colorado Avalanche, the Dallas Stars, and today’s opposition, the Vegas Golden Knights. With only the easier Chicago Blackhawks in the next 5 contests, there is a possibility that the Jets could walk away with only 2-3 out of 10 potential points and stall their slow crawl up the st

SERIES PREVIEW: (6) Saskatoon Blades vs. (3) Edmonton Oil Kings -
It's been a while. For the first time since 1971, WHL clubs in Edmonton and Saskatoon will clash in the WHL Playoffs. While the original Oil Kings franchise moved to Portland, this 2026 WHL Playoffs matchup sees the Blades and Oil Kings face off for the first time since Edmonton returned to the Dub as an expansion team in 2007-08. The third-seed Oil Kings come in with something to prove after seeing a 3-1 series lead against Prince Albert evaporate in Round One of the 2025 postseason, while the Blades are gunning to advance to the second round for the first time since advancing to Game 7 of the 2024 WHL Eastern Conference Championship. Blades alternate captain Rowan Calvert remembers that run all too well and will look to make an impact in his final trip to the playoffs. Calvert, 20, led Saskatoon with a career-best 31 tallies this season, while towering Calgary Flames prospect Hunter Laing and 2026 NHL Draft-eligible Cooper Williams also surpassed 20 goals on the season.
