Nikolaj Ehlers, the hottest goal-scorer for the Hurricanes, tries to send a pass to Seth Jarvis at the top of the crease, but instead Mike Matheson deflects the puck behind Jakub Dobeš in his attempt to cut off the pass. While few players get the Bell Centre going like Arber Xhekaj can, it hasn’t been a banner season for the 25-year-old defenceman. Xhekaj’s story is amazing: undrafted as a teen when he was eligible for the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft in 2017, he worked his way up only to go undrafted in the NHL draft both in 2020 and 2021. Yet his play earned him an invite to the Montreal Canadiens’ development camp in 2021, where he impressed and promptly signed an entry-level deal. His last year of Junior hockey included a trade to his hometown Hamilton Bulldogs, an OHL championship, and being named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team. Jumping straight to the NHL for a rebuilding Canadiens team the following season, Xhekaj was part of a rookie-heavy defensive group on a bad team. Not only is the team still a playoff contender, though its chances are dwindling dramatically, but the Sharks are also very much a lottery contender, putting the team in a very interesting position heading into the final few weeks of the season. As Sharks fans, that means there are two races to watch this time around. The race for the playoffs and the race to see who will have the best odds of picking first overall in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. Playoff Race Update It was a busy night for the contenders. After I clocked out for the week from my full time gig, I decided to spend a bit of time looking to see what the likelihood is the Winnipeg Jets will use their final 14 remaining games to move up or down in the standings. The recent losses to the Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins have made a playoff bid even more unlikely, yet the True Northers are still only 5 points back of the Los Angeles Kings for the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. However, with three more clubs between Winnipeg and a playoff berth, there are many other contenders for the 8th spot. I will dive more into the chances for the Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, or San Jose Sharks ousting the Kings for the post-season later, but lets just say that Los Angeles has by far the easiest schedule left to play…so they have a HUGE advantage.
