GM #8: Calgary Flames @ Winnipeg Jets -
The Winnipeg Jets (5-2-0) will face their first back-to-back game situation of the NHL’s 2025-26 campaign, but they likely should have plenty of energy left over since the True Northers only managed to exert a high level of effort in 1 period last night against the Seattle Kraken. Although the final scoreboard read 3-0 for the opposition, it was really only one goal that was the difference….and I happened to miss it while making a late supper mid-game. So it wasn’t that the Jets played horribly….perhaps just uninspired. Tonight, the Calgary Flames (1-6-1) will visit the Canada Life Centre and I’ll bet they won’t be in a great mode after failing to win any of their last 6 matches. Goal scoring has been a huge issue for our neighbours to the west, as the club has only managed to put up a goal & a half per game to date. Because of the quick turnaround between games, Winnipeg won’t have a mandatory pre

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, • Latest on Kempe and the Kings• Buffalo, Vegas facing interesting decisions with their goalies• Will the NHL have to consider changing the rule about goalie masks coming off? Wednesday was a nice night at home, relaxing on the couch with some turmeric tea and hockey. Montreal beat Calgary 2-1, thanks to an absolutely brilliant Ivan Demidov creation, waiting for the perfect moment to feed Mike Matheson for the overtime winner. (I know there’s Russian trepidation, but it's looking crazier and crazier that Demidov fell to fifth in the Sphere Draft.) The guy I thought of right after was Flames GM Craig Conroy. The game was typical for what we’ve seen from his team: an honest, competitive effort, but not enough offensive juice for two points. If he wanted to make a lateral move — or a panic one — he could. Easily. It’s one of my favourite lines: When there’s blood in the water, you

Thinking Of A Rebuild In Calgary -
from Eric Francis of Sportsnet, The Calgary Flames are on the cusp of what almost certainly looks like a lost season. And the latest team to help put them there is a perfect example of how the Flames should proceed from here. A 2-1 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday extended the Flames losing skid to seven, giving them just three points in their opening eight games. Only 10 teams in the last 40 years have started that poorly and made the playoffs. It’s time to start looking at what a proper rebuild can look like, and there’s no better example right now than Montreal. The difference in Wednesday’s highly entertaining affair was a world-class play by Ivan Demidov that set up Mike Matheson’s winner. Two nights earlier another gritty outing by the Flames was doused by a Mark Scheifele finish that served as a reminder of the difference between the Flames and playoff contenders — high-end skill.
