It’s been a wild summer of spending around the NHL, and the Blackhawks have been among the league’s biggest spenders. General manager Kyle Davidson put pen to paper on the two largest contracts by annual average value in the history of the franchise this summer, first with Bowen Byram and then with Connor Bedard. But the money getting thrown around in the league has been enormous. As of this writing, the Blackhawks are the only team in the league to sign multiple players to contracts north of $9M per this offseason. However, since the start of the summer we’ve seen 12 new contracts written with an AAV of at least $9M. That number doesn’t include new contracts for Blue Jackets center Adam Fantilli or Ducks forward Cutter Gauthier, who are both still waiting for a new deal. Now, I know we’re all focused on things like the Buffalo Sabres replicating last year’s performance, or even exceeding it, and things like Connor Hellebuyck or Kirill Marchenko joining the club. No one is thinking much about the Draft at this point in time. That’s cool. Still, as we discovered this off-season, one never knows how things will transpire on Draft Day. Cooper, a 2006-born forward hailing from Calgary, A.B., is entering his second season with the Royals. Cooper was acquired by the Royals via a trade with the Wenatchee Wild just prior to the start of the 2025-26 season. “Miles has been an important part of our team since he joined us last year, leading both on and off the ice.” said Royals’ Head Coach James Patrick. “When you look for a captain, you look for a player that is respected by his teammates, competes every day and leads by example, Miles checks all those boxes.” Originally drafted in the third-round of the 2021 WHL Draft by the Winnipeg ICE, Cooper has scored 143 points in 189 games in the WHL.
