The Jets split their two games at home defeating the Golden Knights before losing to the Avalanche. They'll head to Denver to conclude their home-and-home set with the Avs which kicks off four games on the road for Winnipeg which will basically determine if they can make a playoff push or not. Although even that may be generous as they have a number of teams they'll have to leapfrog. We will start off your Saturday with two hours of hockey talk on the Illegal Curve Hockey Show. Quick Bites: Sloppy First Period Hurts Sharks Playoff Chances -
Pregame: The Sharks started their 3-game road trip in Nashville tonight in front of a sold-out Nashville crowd. They needed to start this road trip with a win by playing urgently and confidently (spoiler alert: they did NOT). The Sharks went into tonight on a 4-game losing streak, while the Predators were on a 4-game winning streak. With the Sharks chasing the Preds for the second wild card spot in the West, it was imperative that they put their best food forward in what was the biggest game of the season so far. First Period The game started quickly, but not in the way the sharks were hoping for. The Predators struck early after Dickinson fanned on a breakout pass that led directly to a 2-on-1 goal. There was hope though, as the 4th line played a gritty shift that saw all 3 forwards crashing the net in front of Saros and Gaudette scoring off a Mukhamadullin shot from the point.

The Lottery Race: Where Will the Jets End Up? -
After I clocked out for the week from my full time gig, I decided to spend a bit of time looking to see what the likelihood is the Winnipeg Jets will use their final 14 remaining games to move up or down in the standings. The recent losses to the Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins have made a playoff bid even more unlikely, yet the True Northers are still only 5 points back of the Los Angeles Kings for the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. However, with three more clubs between Winnipeg and a playoff berth, there are many other contenders for the 8th spot. I will dive more into the chances for the Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, or San Jose Sharks ousting the Kings for the post-season later, but lets just say that Los Angeles has by far the easiest schedule left to play…so they have a HUGE advantage. With the surprising win on Saturday over the league leading Colorado Avalanche, the Winnipeg Jets have managed to pull within 6 points of the Western Conference’s final wildcard spot. That spot is currently being held by the San Jose Sharks, who have played 1 less game than the True Northers, and our club still needs to pass 4 other franchises in standings before they could grab that last post-season berth. So there is a lot of work to be done with only 17 more contests left in the regular season. After effectively stifling the high powered Avs’ offense for large chunks of yesterday’s contest, Winnipeg will have another difficult test this afternoon when the streaking St. Louis Blues visit. Since both the Winnipeg Jets & Seattle Kraken lost on Tuesday night, our team remains 5 points back of the NHL’s Western Conference’s final wildcard spot…though the Los Angeles Kings have now joined the Kraken at 67 points, while the San Jose Sharks & Nashville Predators are just a single point back of that. So while the True Northers have closed the gap to a potential playoff berth…..they have yet to pass any of the clubs in their way. The Jets’ points streak came to an abrupt end, with a horrible performance against the Anaheim Ducks, so the coaching staff will be looking for a much better effort tonight. In the middle of a long homestand, the Canada Life Centre will host the visiting New York Rangers on Thursday evening, setting up a clash between two of the league’s worst franchises. Up until now, the Jets have stubbornly remained in the wildcard fight, routinely picking up at least one point (only outright lost 4 of their past 16 contests). Despite Winnipeg often adding points to their year total, they actually have only managed to move from the 5th worst record to the 7th. However, since there are 5 teams with 2 or less points ahead of them in the standings….our hockey team could significant diminish the value of their upcoming 1st round draft pick over the remainder of the schedule. This time GM Kevin Cheveldayoff inked a 24 yr forward from the University of St. Thomas named Lucas Wahlin. The Minnesota-born winger signed a one year contract with the Winnipeg Jets, starting in the 2026-27 NHL season, but the right handed forward has agreed to a Amateur Try Out with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose for the remainder of their campaign. Like many other undrafted free agents the Jets have signed before him, Wahlin was the captain of his NCAA hockey squad and has scored at a point per game pace his last two seasons. My wife and I attended the Ottawa-Montreal PWHL game on Sunday, and there is truly reason to believe that this brand of hockey would likely be supported well by fans of all stripes, including older purists who love the game for its own sake. The atmosphere at the game approached the frenzy of a “white out,” and fans cheered every hit, two-on-one breakout, and each goal with aplomb.
