A total of 39 CHL players have been named in Elite Prospect's 2027 NHL Draft ranking and players to watch list. The list is led by Everett's Landon DuPont who earlier this summer captained Canada to gold at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and helped the Silvertips to its first WHL title last season. "At this point, Landon DuPont needs no introduction," wrote Mitchell Brown, Elite Prospect's Head of Scouting and Pro content. Hockey broadcaster and former Seattle Thunderbirds coach Barry Melrose dies -
Barry Melrose, a hockey player-turned-coach who led the Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final before going on to a long career in broadcasting the sport, has died. He was 70. ESPN announced Melrose’s death Wednesday after his wife informed the network. “From the flowing locks of his distinctive mullet to the flared lapels of his trademark long suit coats, Barry Melrose cut an unmistakable figure whenever you were fortunate enough to run into him at a rink or catch him on your television screen,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “You were even more fortunate if you engaged him in conversation or listened to his analysis because he never failed to boost your love of the game of hockey.” The Seattle Thunderbirds, who Melrose coached in 1988-89, remembered him in a social media post: The Seattle Thunderbirds are saddened to learn

New team, new connections: Blazers bonding during pre-season -
By Dave Dormer   Even though he’s lived in North America for the last couple of years chasing his dream of playing pro hockey, Mikhail Cherepanov is still experiencing some cultural firsts. His latest came soon after the 18-year-old Russian import arrived in Kamloops ahead of the Blazers training camp, when he joined his new teammates for an afternoon of baseball. It was his first time playing the sport. “It was a great experience,” he said with a beaming smile after the Blazers won their pre-season opener 4-3 in a shootout over the Penticton Vees. “It was so much fun because all the boys were there. I was a pitcher, then I hit the ball. They tried to explain me all the rules, but I didn’t get it.” Hailing from Yekaterinburg — Russia’s fourth largest city, located 1,600 kilometres east of Moscow in the Ural mountains — Cherepanov played youth hockey there, then moved to New Hampshire, where he played one year of U16 hockey before joining the Mountain Kings in the NAHL last s

Salisbury brings confidence to Rebels camp -
By DANNY RODE - A year ago Nathan Salisbury was an invite to Red Deer Rebels training camp. All he did was grab the attention of the coaching staff to the point they kept their eye on the talented six-foot-three, 185-pound netminder out of Edmonton. He played last season with the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the AJHL where he was solid in 34 games finishing with a 3.21 goals-against-average, a .902 save percentage and a 17-14-1 record. He was named to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s North All-Rookie Team. He impressed enough that the Rebels signed the 18-year-old on June 3. Salisbury returned to the Rebels camp this year and proved last year was no fluke, doing everything in his power, so far, to grab a spot on the club’s regular season roster. But Nathan isn’t one to assume anything in his battle with veterans Matthew Kondro and Peyton Shore. “I guess it’s on the back of my mind, but I’m not really focused on that,” he said. “They are my teammates and we do the bes

NHL’s Youngest, Frank in Vegas, Kane’s Fire Night, and Other Blackhawks Bullets -
This shouldn’t come as a shock, but the Blackhawks will begin the 2026-27 season with the youngest roster in the NHL (barely ahead of the Montreal Canadiens). While the tweet below includes Oliver Moore, Artyom Levshunov and Connor Bedard in their graphic, let’s not forget that the team is not only young in age but also experience in a lot of spots. But last season was valuable experience. It’s also important to keep in mind that two of the core veterans who will be a big part of where the Blackhawks go from here, Spencer Knight and Bowen Byram, are both 25 years old. They’re both still, statistically, entering the prime years of their respective careers. I’ve said it for months now, but the coming season is Year Two of Kyle Davidson’s proof of concept. Now, the experience the young talent he’s collected needs to begin taking steps forward individually and as a g

Hockey Mourns the Passing of Barry Melrose -
Neil Everett used to close their NHL segments saying something like “Cool is the Rule” — and that summed up Barry Melrose perfectly. For a couple generations of hockey fans in the United States, Barry Melrose appearing on your television screen meant the other people in the room needed to shut up. Melrose joined the hockey crew at ESPN in 1996 and became a foundation of their coverage. For years, Melrose with Bill Pidto, Everett or Steve Levy were the hockey guys at the four-letter network. When he and Everett took a lounge approach to their hockey reports, he looked at home. Later in his television career, Melrose was known for his sharp suits and, usually, a cigar and cocktail were within reach. His flowing mullet was magnificent. And his analysis was as on point as his pocket square. Barry Melrose was the best. RIP

OUR 18 – Can another round of new faces keep Cats in contention? -
In the wake of their 2025 Gilles-Courteau Trophy Championship, the Moncton Wildcats took advantage of new roster building avenues to short circuit the traditional rebuilding process in junior hockey and earn a second straight regular season title and Final appearance. This year, they’re hoping to travel the same path to keep that momentum alive. That path, of course, passes through the United States as another round of both new and existing American talent has moved up to the Hub City to keep the competitive juices flowing among Cats players and fans alike. Among the returnees up front are 40-goal scorer Niko Tournas and hard-working power forward Rian Chudzinski, a 2026 draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks. For the most part, however, there will be a largely new cast of characters vying to find the back of the net. NHL Draft Classes Getting Paid: Examining Recent Contract Trends -
The summer of 2026 will be remembered as the summer the NHL went wild spending money. When Minnesota handed Kirill Kaprizov a contract with a $17M AAV one year ago it sent shockwaves around the NHL. That cap hit was $3M more than Leon Draisaitl, who was at the top of the leaderboard. That was only a sign of things to come — in a big way. When the 2027-28 NHL season begins, Kaprizov will be the fourth-highest paid player in the NHL. Indeed, four contracts with a higher AAV than Draisaitl’s $14M were signed this summer — including Connor Bedard’s $15M deal with the Blackhawks — and we’re still waiting for Anaheim to sign Cutter Gauthier and Columbus to get something done with Adam Fantilli. What’s become increasingly interesting is not only how quickly the AAV on the top deals is
