Travis Konecny led the Flyers last season with 68 point in 77 games. He had 14 power play points, two game-winning goals, a short-handed tally, and averaged just over 19 minutes per game. He just edged Trevor Zegras in points as Zegras had 67. But Konecny also had a far better plus/minus than the former Duck, ending the year at +14 while Zegras was even. In the playoffs, Konecny had a goal and four assists as the Flyers faltered to Carolina in round two. Despite the average playoff, it was clear Konecny was the Flyers top-line right winger from start to finish. And head coach Rick Tocchet never lost confidence in the forward. It’s been a wild summer of spending around the NHL, and the Blackhawks have been among the league’s biggest spenders. General manager Kyle Davidson put pen to paper on the two largest contracts by annual average value in the history of the franchise this summer, first with Bowen Byram and then with Connor Bedard. But the money getting thrown around in the league has been enormous. As of this writing, the Blackhawks are the only team in the league to sign multiple players to contracts north of $9M per this offseason. However, since the start of the summer we’ve seen 12 new contracts written with an AAV of at least $9M. That number doesn’t include new contracts for Blue Jackets center Adam Fantilli or Ducks forward Cutter Gauthier, who are both still waiting for a new deal. The Florida Panthers acquired defenseman Emil Pieniniemi from the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 13, 2026 for the rights to forward Oliver Okuliar. Pieniniemi was selected by the Penguins in the third round (91st overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft. During his draft season he played 31 games for Kärpät’s team in the U20 SM-sarja, finishing with one goal and 12 assists, and he also made his Liiga debut for the organization. He was chosen tenth overall by the Kingston Frontenacs in the CHL Import Draft a week later and then signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Pittsbugh on July 14, 2023. The 2023-24 regular season saw Pieniniemi remain in Finland and appear in 38 top-flight Liiga games with Kärpät, where he put up two goals and four assists to along with a minus-two rating and ten penalty minutes. Now, I know we’re all focused on things like the Buffalo Sabres replicating last year’s performance, or even exceeding it, and things like Connor Hellebuyck or Kirill Marchenko joining the club. No one is thinking much about the Draft at this point in time. That’s cool. Still, as we discovered this off-season, one never knows how things will transpire on Draft Day. I certainly never envisioned the Sabres selecting at #4 and at #20 in the first round, but…that’s exactly what happened.
