The Habs were third in the Atlantic Division with 88 points, and the Blue Jackets had just overtaken the Pittsburgh Penguins a couple of days earlier to sit second in the Metropolitan Division with 87. Over the past two weeks, the teams have gone in polar opposite directions. Montreal left after that game on a five-game road trip, winning all five, and adding two more wins after that streak was broken upon the return home. Cole Caufield Notches 50 Goals ft. Marco D'Amico | The Sheet with Jeff Marek -
Jeff Marek is joined by Marco D'Amico on today’s episode of The Sheet to break down a historic night for Cole Caufield. Caufield reaches the 50-goal mark, becoming the first player for the Montreal Canadiens to score 50 in a season since Stephane Richer did it back in the 1989-90 season, a milestone that further cements Caufield as one of the league’s premier young goal scorers. Marek and D’Amico discuss the reaction inside the Canadiens locker room, including praise from Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Lane Hutson, while also highlighting the quietly excellent seasons from Suzuki and Slafkovsky that have helped drive Montreal’s push late in the year. From Caufield’s historic accomplishment to the Canadiens’ playoff hopes, the guys also examine what lies ahead for Montreal and how a potential first-round matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning could shape up if the Canadiens secure a postseason berth. #TheSheet #JeffMarek #MarcoDAmico #MontrealCanadiens #GoHabsGo #ColeCaufield #NickSu

Analytics Advantage: Previewing a Potential Montreal Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning First Round Playoff Matchup -
This one is the generational clash. Tampa Bay has Andrei Vasilevskiy, Nikita Kucherov, Jake Guentzel, and Brayden Point — veterans who know what playoff hockey costs. Nine teams Have Clinched Playoff Berths, Which One is the Most Surprising, if Any? -
As we sit here on April 10, with no NHL games on the calendar tonight - which mensa student came up with this one - my thoughts turn to the standings. Nine teams have clinched. Carolina, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Montreal and Tampa with Boston on the verge of being the sixth in the Eastern Conference. Out West, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota and Utah all have punched their ticket. Bottom Six Minutes: Cole Caufield’s goal, a lifetime in the making -
The Montreal Canadiens played the absolute biggest remaining game on their schedule Thursday night, hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning with a chance to pass them for second place in the Atlantic Division. It had every bit of intensity you would expect from a playoff game, and with good reason, as the odds that these teams will meet in the first round seem to strengthen by the game. The Habs controlled the play well through three periods, and though it was a very tight margin of victory, they found the goals they needed to take a 2-1 victory in regulation. One goal took on a little more significance, of course, as Cole Caufield made modern Habs history by reaching the 50-goal plateau. The Montreal Canadiens will not be pushed around -
It’s an easy narrative. The Montreal Canadiens, the youngest team in NHL history to make the playoffs (for the second year in a row, beating their own record), are filled with smaller skilled players and might not be ready for playoff success. The playoffs are where time and space gets taken away. It’s less about skill and more about making your opponent miserable. Last year, you could argue that the series against the Washington Capitals turned on the Tom Wilson hit on Alexandre Carrier. The Canadiens never bounced back from that. Tonight, they made it seem like they never wanted that to happen again. The narrative is that the Canadiens lack toughness, that edge that you need in the postseason. It’s clear that the Tampa Bay Lightning wanted to send a message and subscribed to that thinking. Only something happened: The Canadiens fought back. It wasn’t even the guy you would expect to do it alone, it was more than just

Canadiens vs. Lightning Top Six Minutes: Habs recover from late goal to move up in Atlantic -
First period The puck has been in Tampa Bay’s zone a couple of times in the opening minutes, so it’s already a better start than Montreal had been having over the past week. The top line, Lane Hutson, and Jayden Struble have the Lightning chasing in their own zone. Tampa Bay’s final act on the shift is a desperation stick lift that hits Struble in the face and draws blood, giving Montreal a four-minute power play. They’re getting shots, and that’s what you want to see. The Lightning are surprisingly lax in their coverage, maybe the effect of fatigue from all their games recently. It’s a shooting gallery in the Lightning zone. Montreal has a 5-0 shot advantage, and 14 attempts. Even with no goal they’re looking good. Tampa Bay gets its first shot on a giveaway inside Montreal’s end. It’s an easy stop for Jakub Dobeš, but they should probably not do that

Special teams are a major concern with them going 0-4 on the powerplay including almost a minute of 5 on 3 time. The penalty kill surrendered two goals on three attempts. Aside from the special teams’ woes, the turnovers in the defensive zone need to be cleaned up heading into the playoffs. To their credit, Buffalo kept on working and willed themselves to a three-goal third per

Why Bruins should call up James Hagens for much-needed offensive spark -
After three consecutive games scoring one goal, the Boston Bruins finally put together a decent offensive performance in Tuesday night’s road game against the Eastern Conference-leading Carolina Hurricanes. The B’s lost in overtime, but they did score five goals. Morgan Geekie, who hadn’t scored in 17 straight games, netted a hat trick to give him a team-leading (and career-high) 37 goals. Despite the uptick in goals, this game provided even more evidence for why the Bruins need to sign top prospect James Hagens and get him on the NHL roster ASAP.Hagens, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, recently signed an ATO deal with the Providence Bruins after his

Bottom Six Minutes: Habs overcome a rough outing to beat the Panthers -
After a disappointing shutout loss on Sunday, the Montreal Canadiens were back at it on Tuesday night, hosting the already playoff-eliminated Florida Panthers. It would seem like a perfect opportunity to get back on track with a convincing win, but the Habs struggled yet again, and found themselves staring down a one-goal deficit in the dying minutes. As they have many times before, they pulled a rabbit out of their hat, forcing overtime, and ultimately a shootout to take the two points, tying themselves with Tampa and Buffalo at the top of their division. It wasn’t the kind of overall performance that will usually earn two points. If you don’t want to hear it from me, take it from captain Nick Suzuki. If you're harping on any of your fellow fans for not liking that performance, take it from the captain. If you didn't like it, you're right to not like it, and it is definitely a good thing that the

Canadiens vs. Panthers Top Six Minutes: Setting the table for Thursday -
Lots of changes to the lineup after Sunday’s loss. Joe Veleno is ill and Brendan Gallagher is a scratch to make the math work on the returns of both Kirby Dach and Alexandre Texier. Adam Engström is also in as Kaiden Guhle needs a therapy day. First period A difficult opening shift for Engström, who sees A.J. Greer skate around him and he has to haul down the Panthers forward. Newhook did a nice job on the first PK unit to get a clear, but it was a shooting gallery on Jakub Dobeš in the final minute of the penalty. A first big cheer from the crowd after the new-look second line got the puck to Ivan Demidov in the slot for a toe-drag wrister that just missed the target. The Panthers score on their sixth shot of the period. Montreal just wasn’t prepared for them to come out playing like this it seems. The second line is trying at least. They run a cycle in the offensive zone that the
