The 2026-27 National Hockey League season gets underway tonight, and among the 32 teams, 82 former QMJHL players will begin the season in the NHL, an increase of 11 from last year. The Pittsburgh Penguins lead the way with seven QMJHL alumni: Sidney Crosby, Gabriel D’Aigle, Samuel Girard, Ryan Graves, Hendrix Lapierre, Kristopher Letang and Oliver Okuliar. It should be noted that D’Aigle and Okuliar are currently sidelined with injuries. The New Jersey Devils follow with six. Recently acquired, Anthony Mantha and Rémi Poirier join Jake Allen, Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer, who have been with the team for several years. The Montréal Canadiens round out the top three with five QMJHL alumni: Zachary Bolduc, Alexandre Carrier, Phillip Danault, Noah Dobson and Samuel Montembeault. Vegas was just a few wins shy of the Cup last summer, falling in six games to the champion Carolina Hurricanes in the 2026 Final. Most of that roster is back, although the main subtraction is a noticeable one: forward Pavel Dorofeyev, a salary cap casualty who had a team-high 37 goals during the regular season and 12 more in the playoffs. But VGK made the most of that situation by picking up a pair of first-round picks and a third in a trade with the Rangers, so they didn’t walk away empty-handed. And someone will (hopefully) score the first goal of the new year for the franchise. But which Blackhawk will earn the distinction as the first player to light the lamp in the regular season? Over the past three years — Connor Bedard‘s NHL career — we have seen three different players score the first goal of the regular season. With the Chicago Blackhawks’ four preseason games in the books, the only things standing between them and the start of the 2026-27 regular season are a practice in Chicago on Monday morning and a flight to Vegas. The Blackhawks made a number of moves this summer to bolster their roster. But the real impact is going to be made by the growth from the young core — and two incoming rookies who have been very impressive thus far. So, with just one day remaining in camp, it’s a good time to look at what we’ve seen from all of the players in training camp. We’ll start our breakdowns with the forwards. We’re obviously skipping Connor Bedard because he wasn’t on the ice with the rest of the team. Preseason’s Over! Frondell, Kantserov, Teuvo, Blue Line? and Other Blackhawks Bullets -
Last night‘s preseason finale checked most of the boxes you would want, whether you’re a Blackhawks coach or fan. The Hawks won the game, and held onto a lead late in the game. The Blackhawks got goals from both of their highly regarded rookies, Anton Frondell and Roman Kantserov. Kantserov got run at center and won 7 of 11 faceoffs while driving offense. Teuvo Teräväinen played his best game of the preseason. So did Andrew Mangiapane. Ethan Del Mastro had a good night, and he was skating primarily with Artyom Levshunov (not an easy ask).
