The Florida Panthers selected Latvian foward Sandis Vimanis in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft at Belle Centre in Montreal. During his draft season, Vilmanis played in 40 games with Luleå HF’s junior team in Sweden’s J20 Nationell, where he tied for the club lead with 18 goals and ranked third in points with 32. On the international stage, the 6-foot-1, 192-pound Riga native skated in four games with Latvia at the 2022 IIHF U18 World Junior Championship, where he posted three points (1G/2A) and served as an assistant captain. The two topping the list were John Carlson and Darnell Nurse, both of which Philadelphia general manager Danny Briere was hoping to land in free agency. As well all know Carlson signed with Tampa Bay, while Nurse ended up with the Sharks. So Briere came up empty-handed. Also, the situation with Rasmus Ristolainen — in the final year of his contract and with no plans for Briere to re-sign him — has meant Philadelphia possibly looking outside their pipeline to fill a need for a big, rugged defenseman. Burke Hood A rash of injuries spelled doom for the Vancouver Giants' playoff hopes in 2025-26, but netminder Burke Hood was a bright spot for the young squad. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound puckstopper went 18-18-1-1 with a 3.83 goals-against average and an .892 save percentage, while making 40 or more saves on five occasions. The 19-year-old was drafted with the 170th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2025 NHL Draft. Five QMJHL players are among the 27 players who will take part in Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team training camp ahead of the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, set for Aug. 3-9 at Rogers Place and the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton. This group will include the top two picks in the 2025 QMJHL draft: the first overall pick, forward Alexis Joseph (Lachenaie, QC) of the Saint John Sea Dogs, and the second overall pick, Malik L’Italien (Montréal, QC) of the Halifax Mooseheads. Regina, Sask. – The Regina Pats announced today that the hockey club has signed defenceman Ossi Tukio to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Tukio, 18, was selected by the Pats in the first round (18th overall) of the 2026 CHL Import Draft. The 6-foot-2, 187-pound left-shot defenceman from Tampere, Finland, spent the 2025-26 season captaining Ilves' U20 team in Finland's U20 SM-sarja. Tukio recorded 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) in 34 regular-season games, helping lead Ilves to a second-place finish while ranking second among all draft-eligible defencemen in league scoring.
