2025 Buffalo Sabres Player Report Card: Bowen Byram

Total Season Stats: 7G, 31A | 38 PTS | +11 | 46 PIM

Age: 23

Contract Status: RFA, arbitration eligible

Bowen Byram had a perfectly good season in his first full year with the Buffalo Sabres, often forming the team’s top defensive pairing alongside captain Rasmus Dahlin. His future with the team, however, seems uncertain, as Byram’s name has been in trade talks for quite some time and he is set to become an RFA this summer.

Byram was one of just two Sabres players to skate in all 82 games this season, and finished the year second among Sabres skaters (22:42) in average time on ice per game. (Only Dahlin, his often-D partner, played more – at 24:14). Byram also led all Sabres skaters in blocks (116) and total time on ice. And, as an aside, he led Sabres defenders with two game-winning goals.

He also registered 75 hits, eighth-most on the team and fourth-most among Buffalo defenders. On the flip side, he was also third on the team in giveaways, but I’m not sure how much stock to put into that, considering Dahlin (105) had the most giveaways, alongside guys like JJ Peterka (87) and Alex Tuch (76).

Per Sabres.com, Byram played over 600 minutes of 5-on-5 time with Dahlin, and their combined “plus-20 goal differential in those minutes was tied as the best by any pair in the NHL, matched only by Colorado’s Cale Makar and Devon Toews.” That’s pretty decent company.

In his postseason comments, Byram seemed to indicate that he wanted to re-sign with the Sabres. Of course, that decision is only up to him to a certain extent. If Kevyn Adams & co. are entertaining trade offers for him, perhaps the team will find an appropriate suitor with the right return. Or, Byram can re-sign and be a part of this team’s blueline core for years to come.
