They called them 'Spada Family Road Trips' and they started when Guelph Storm defenceman Grant Spada was five years old. Spada, a draft pick of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning, would bundle into the family car with mom Alison, dad Craig and older sister Lauren for the three and a half hour drive to a hospital in Pittsburgh every 21 days for a year. Alison had already had one surgery for her brain cancer in London, but now there were trips to Pittsburgh where she was part of a clinical trial. Two more brain surgeries would follow, one in London and one in Buffalo, plus many hours of radiation plus chemotherapy. "The kids were so young, they just got used to it I guess," says Alison over the phone from her home in Ridgeway, a small town just outside Fort Erie. Her last surgery was in 2018 and Alison hasn't needed another one or spent any time in hospital in eight years. "She's my hero and she's my inspiration," says Grant, 19, who gushes praise when talking about his mom. "All she's

The Windsor Spitfires secured a 3-0 victory at home Thursday night shutting out the Erie Otters. After a scoreless first period, the Spitfires found momentum in the second scoring three goals to command the game. Michal Svrcek opened the scoring at 10:55 of the second with the assists going to Jonathan Brown and Ethan Garden. The Spitfires doubled their lead at 16:35 when Max Brocklehurst found the back of the net. The assists credited to Hamza Havusic and Ty Bergeron. Just two minutes later, Havusic added a goal of his own with Bergeron and Brocklehurst picking up the assists, extending Windsor’s dominant lead. Starting the third up 3-0, the Spitfires continued to apply pressure, holding the Otters off the scoresheet for the remainder of the game. The Brampton Steelheads have acquired 16-year-old Tyler Cooper from the Erie Otters. BRAMPTON, ON – The Brampton Steelheads have completed a trade with the Erie Otters, acquiring Tyler Cooper in exchange for a second-round pick (KIT) in the 2028 OHL Priority Selection and a fifth-round pick (BAR) in the 2029 OHL Priority Selection. Cooper, 16, joins the Steelheads after spending the past two seasons with the Otters, recording 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 75 career regular-season OHL games. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward recorded 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points in 63 games during his rookie season in 2025-26. A native of Lake Forest, Illinois, Cooper was originally selected by Erie in the second round, 34th overall, of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection.

This was the first of this weekend’s two games between these rivals, with the IceDogs hopping across the border to face off in Erie at Erie Insurance Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tonight’s game brought back IceDogs alumnus Johnny Schaefer for the ceremonial puck drop. Johnny played in Niagara from 2016-2019, and his younger brother Matthew played for the rivals, the Erie Otters, from 2023-2025 before being drafted first overall by the New York Islanders in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. The first period was scoreless and relatively uneventful but still had some exciting moments. NIAGARA, ONT. – The Niagara IceDogs have traded forward Liam Spencer to the Sarnia Sting in exchange for Erie’s sixth-round pick in the 2027 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. Spencer was originally drafted to the Mississauga Steelheads in the 4th round, 76th overall in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection Draft. Spencer would go on to join the London Knights, winning a Memorial Cup before Niagara acquired him in September of 2025. The London, ON native put up a career-high nine points (2G-7A) in 60 games played with the IceDogs in the 2025-2026 season. Spencer has been a key member of the community, frequently attending school visits and hospital visits, alongside various other initiatives. The IceDogs thank Liam for his contributions to the organization and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his hockey career.

Petes Acquire Pick From Spitfires in Exchange for Thanasi Marentette -
Peterborough Petes General Manager and Vice President of Operations Michael Oke announced today that the team has traded defenceman Thanasi Marentette to the WIndsor Spitfires in exchange for Windsor’s 10th round pick in 2030. “I want to thank Thanasi for everything he’s done for the Petes and the city of Peterborough over the last couple of years,” noted Oke. “He’s been a very hard worker, both on and off the ice, and has done a lot for the community through Marentette’s Mission. We wish him the best as he joins his hometown team in Windsor.” Marentette, a Windsor native, was originally selected by the Petes in the 10th round, 196th overall, of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. My biggest takeaway from the past week boils down to a pretty simple reality: the Blackhawks can compete with the middle third of the NHL right now. They can beat some good teams; they’ve skated with and defeated the Blues, Penguins and Jets. All three of those teams is considered a playoff contender by most people. But the upper tier of teams — the Vegas, Dallas, Utah tier — is going to be a problem. The Blackhawks played two good games and earned wins against the Penguins and Jets, but presented very little the Stars had to worry about on Saturday night. Last night’s game was a veteran Dallas team putting on a clinic at the expense of the Blackhawks. Hopefully the Hawks take that tape and learn from it. The

On Saturday, October 17, the Peterborough Petes hosted the Barrie Colts at the Peterborough Memorial Centre in front of their second sold-out crowd of the season. After a strong start to the season, the Knights are facing their first real test of adversity after suffering their second straight loss Friday night, falling 4-3 to the Erie Otters in a shootout finish. Still missing from the lineup was defenceman Maksim Sokolovskii, who remains week-to-week with a lower-body injury. The Knights started strong, building a two-goal lead with goals from Eloan Le Gallic and Cohen Bidgood. 19-year-old Bidgood has been setting a great example for this new-era Knights team. Now in his third year in London, his progression has been fun to watch. After recording 14 goals last season, Bidgood has already scored four in six games this year, continuing to prove himself as an important piece of the lineup. NORTH BAY, Ont. — The North Bay Battalion has acquired defenceman Jean-Samuel Daigneault from the Brantford Bulldogs, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Friday. North Bay sent Brantford two OHL Priority Selection picks, a fourth-rounder in 2028 that originally belonged to the Erie Otters and the Battalion’s own sixth-rounder in 2030. “We’re thrilled to be able to add Jean-Samuel to our group,” said Adam Dennis, director of hockey operations. “He’s one of the many players who decided to make the jump to the Canadian Hockey League this offseason. “There was a glut of quality defencemen in Brantford, which opened up this opportunity for him to join our club. The Frontenacs are coming off an unusual weekend at Slush Puppie Place. October 2, they beat the Peterborough Petes by a 5-3 final score. Then, on October 4, they dropped a game to the Erie Otters by a final score of 8-6, unfortunately highlighted by the defensive struggles that have plagued the Frontenacs early in the 2026-27 campaign. Since then, Kingston has had a full week of practice to work on their defensive hockey before what hypothetically could be a “get right game” for the Fronts. Kingston, ON - The Kingston Frontenacs battled through a high-scoring affair Sunday afternoon, falling 8-6 to the Erie Otters at Slush Puppie Place. Kingston opened the scoring 7:38 into the game when Robin Kuzma finished off a feed from Adam Goljer and Landon Wright. Aleks Kulemin then doubled the lead just under three minutes later, scoring his second of the season with Dante D’Andrea picking up the assist. Erie answered late in the opening frame before scoring twice early in the second to take a 3-2 lead. The Frontenacs responded quickly, with Nolan Snyder tying the game on the power play at 3:34 of the second. Erie regained the lead before Adam Goljer converted on another Kingston power play to make it 4-4. Kulemin then restored the Frontenacs' lead at 10:46, scoring his second of the afternoon and third of the season.

The London Knights faced their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 7-2 to the Flint Firebirds at Canada Life Place. Not exactly the result London was hoping for after an undefeated run to start the season. Heading into Sunday’s matchup, the Knights sat at the top of the Western Conference while the Flint Firebirds were among the conference’s bottom teams. Just 29 seconds into the game, newly appointed Flint captain Jimmy Lombardi opened the scoring with a wrap-around goal. Flint defenceman Lucas Nutting made it 2-0. Peterborough was coming off of a 4-0 win over the Erie Otters at home the night before, and would now be facing the Frontenacs on the road for their second game in two nights. The Petes went down 5-1 after two periods, but fought back in the third. A late goal by Yanis Lutz would have put Peterborough within one, but was waived off for goaltender interference. Petes Acquire Goaltender Matthew Koprowski from Attack -
Peterborough Petes General Manager and Vice President of Operations Michael Oke announced today that the team has acquired 2007-born goaltender Matthew Koprowski from the Owen Sound Attack in exchange for a conditional 15th round pick (SOO) in 2028. Koprowski, a 2007-born goaltender from Komoka, ON, was originally selected by the Attack in the fourth round, 72nd overall, of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection from the Elgin Middlesex Canucks U16s. In January of 2024, Koprowski signed with the Attack after playing in 34 games with the Komoka Kings in the GOJHL. Over the past two seasons, Koprowski has played in 51 games for Owen Sound, holding a record of 16-23-6, while also putting up a 4.32 GAA and a .870 SV%. In 2025, Koprowski attended St. Louis Blues training camp as an undrafted free agent invite, after attending Toronto Maple Leafs development camp earlier that summer.

On Thursday, October 1, the Peterborough Petes hosted the Erie Otters at the Peterborough Memorial Centre for the only time this season. The game was presented by PETE 99.7. The game was a special one for Petes OA forward Lucas Karmiris. Karmiris was acquired by Peterborough from the Brampton Steelheads in August of 2025, getting injured in training camp and battling multiple knee surgeries that kept him out for the 2025-26 season. Tonight, Karmiris suited up for the Petes for the first time, playing in his first OHL game since April of 2025. CHL graduates account for 47.9% of NHL Opening Night rosters, with all 32 NHL clubs and 60 of 61 CHL franchises represented As the National Hockey League (NHL) opens its 2026-27 season tonight, 400 graduates of the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) feature on Opening Night rosters. Together, they account for 47.9% of the 835 players listed across all 32 clubs, making the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) the most represented development hockey league in the world. Both totals include players on injured reserve and other non-roster lists. The total includes 191 alumni of the OHL, 128 from the WHL and 82 from the QMJHL.
