FLINT — The Firebirds started the week with a record of 6-2-1-0, with three games across three days on the schedule. Before the puck dropped for the first game against in-state rival Saginaw, the newest OHL Power Rankings were released. The Guelph Storm held the top spot while Flint gained a position to claim second. Additionally, the club announced that they had signed free agent forward Anton Stackow, who had attended the last two Firebirds training camps and appeared in two preseason contests. The busy weekend began at the Dow Event Center with a Friday night tilt. The Birds’ offense started hot, netting three unanswered tallies in the first period, two of which were on power plays. Martins Klaucans, Jimmy Lombardi, and Brady Smith each struck paydirt for Flint. From there, it was all Saginaw, scoring twice in the middle frame and once more in the third. The Blackhawks took an early lead against Montreal last night and the Canadiens immediately started grabbing, whacking, hitting, shoving and slashing the Hawks all over the ice. And it worked. That’s been the painfully clear book on the Blackhawks this season: Chicago’s speed can be a problem, but they can get bullied. When they get pushed around, they lose focus — and the puck. And when the Blackhawks’ power play is ineffective like last night (0 for 5 is ineffective in my opinion), taking penalties to get in an extra hit isn’t a big deal because the Hawks aren’t going to make their opponent pay for the infraction. ICEDOGS TRADE LIAM SPENCER TO SARNIA STING -
NIAGARA, ONT. – The Niagara IceDogs have traded forward Liam Spencer to the Sarnia Sting in exchange for Erie’s sixth-round pick in the 2027 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. Spencer was originally drafted to the Mississauga Steelheads in the 4th round, 76th overall in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection Draft. Spencer would go on to join the London Knights, winning a Memorial Cup before Niagara acquired him in September of 2025. The London, ON native put up a career-high nine points (2G-7A) in 60 games played with the IceDogs in the 2025-2026 season. Spencer has been a key member of the community, frequently attending school visits and hospital visits, alongside various other initiatives. The IceDogs thank Liam for his contributions to the organization and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his hockey career.

The London Knights have announced the team’s 2026-27 leadership group naming one captain and two alternates. Captain ● Ryan Brown Alternate Captains ● Evan Van Gorp ● Cohen Bidgood Voted on by his teammates, Ryan Brown has been announced as the 55th captain in franchise history. Acquired in a trade with the Sarnia Sting in December of 2025, Brown has appeared in 189 OHL regular season games, the most on this year’s roster. The Newmarket Ontario native wears the C two years after another Newmarket born London Knight in Denver Barkey who led the team to the 2025 Memorial Cup Championship. Going into Friday night’s matchup, the Sudbury Wolves found themselves at the top of the Eastern Conference, undefeated so far this season. But the London Knights don’t shy away from a challenge. London showed up offensively, and the first period saw some big hits and altercations as both teams looked to set the tone early. When Jaxon Cover took a knee-on-knee hit from Sudbury defenceman Liam Ladds, Thomas Zocco didn’t hesitate to drop the gloves in response. Both players received a major for fighting and a minor for kneeing and instigating, respectively. With just two minutes left in the first frame, Marcus Nordmark opened the scoring for London. Seventeen WHL players named to Canada’s rosters for 2026 U17 World Challenge -
Calgary, Alta. – Seventeen Western Hockey League players will represent Hockey Canada at the 2026 U17 World Challenge. Hockey Canada announced the 44 players named to the rosters for Canada Red and Canada White on Wednesday morning. The 2026 U17 World Challenge is scheduled for November 1-7 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ont. Regina Pats forwards Liam Pue and Maddox Schultz return to represent Canada for the second consecutive year after helping Canada White to a silver medal at the 2025 U17 World Challenge. Both Pue and Schultz also represented Canada at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, helping the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team claim gold in Edmonton. TORONTO, ON — The Canadian Hockey League is proud to announce that 44 players and prospects from the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League — representing 35 of the CHL’s 61 member clubs — will compete for Canada Red and Canada White at the 2026 Under-17 World Challenge, set for Nov. 1-9 at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ont. The strong representation from across the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL on both Canadian rosters further underscores the CHL’s central role in Canada’s elite player pathway. Players and prospects from the Member Leagues have also been central to Canada’s recent success at the event, with Canada winning gold at each of the last three Under-17 World Challenges and the past two finals featuring Canada Red and Canada White facing one another for gold. Over that span, 107 CHL players have taken home medals, including 66 gold medalists.

Nick Bogas, who hails from nearby Royal Oak, Michigan, netted his first OHL goal and pitched in a trio of helpers to lead the Birds to a commanding 5-2 victory. The win was Flint’s first on home ice for the season. Dima Zhilkin and Braidy Wassilyn extended their point streaks to eight games, and Jacob Cloutier scored unassisted to send the game to OT. Zhilkin's deciding shootout goal handed Saginaw their first shootout win this season. Stepan Shurygin made 34 saves on 36 shots and was unbeaten in the shootout. Saginaw opened the scoring to make it 1-0 at 6:00. Ryan Hanrahan bounced the puck off the right wall, which was collected by Braidy Wassilyn. FLINT - The Flint Firebirds propelled themselves to a 5-2 victory over the Kitchener Rangers on Wednesday night at the Dort Financial Center. The Birds buried two power play goals, Nick Bogas tallied four points, and Mason Courville posted 22 saves to secure the first home win of the season. HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers opened up the scoring late in the first period with a power play goal from Luca Santala. Tanner Lam received a pass from Luca Romano at the top of the faceoff circle. Lam found Santala at the back door to quickly snap the puck past Mason Courville to put the Rangers up 1-0 heading into the second period. The schedule for the 2026 World U17 Hockey Challenge in Oakville, ON. has been announced. The tournament will begin on Nov. 1 with the final set for Nov. 7. All games will be played at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. The U17 World Challenge is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence and includes two Canadian teams and four international entries. In July, 80 CHL drafted players came together for a development camp. It was for the Soo Greyhounds, when overage rearguard Spencer Evans left Saturday’s 5-4 win over North Bay with a second period upper-body injury. Fortunately for the Greyhounds, who begin a two-game trip on Friday in Sarnia (7:05 p.m.), the Stittsville, Ont., native avoided anything serious. The Hounds figure the 20-year-old (2006 birth year) is week-to-week, while Evans thinks he could be back in as early as two weeks.

CHL graduates account for 47.9% of NHL Opening Night rosters, with all 32 NHL clubs and 60 of 61 CHL franchises represented As the National Hockey League (NHL) opens its 2026-27 season tonight, 400 graduates of the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) feature on Opening Night rosters. Together, they account for 47.9% of the 835 players listed across all 32 clubs, making the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) the most represented development hockey league in the world. Adam Novotný Named OHL’s Cogeco Player of the Week -
Vancouver Canucks prospect Adam Novotny of the Peterborough Petes is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, three assists and six points over three games. Novotny returned from Canucks training camp to make an immediate impact in his season debut on Thursday, scoring twice and adding a pair of assists in a 7-4 win over the Sarnia Sting. He followed with a goal and an assist on Saturday as the Petes fell 6-3 at home to the Ottawa 67’s. All three of Novotny’s assists were primary, and his 18 shots on goal led all OHL players last week. An 18-year-old from Kobylice, Czechia, Novotny was selected by Vancouver in the first round (24th overall) of the 2026 NHL Draft. He was originally Peterborough’s first-round pick (eighth overall) in the 2024 CHL Import Draft. Novotny won bronze with Czechia at the 2025 World Junior Championship and claimed silver in 2026.
