After the Everett Silvertips broke through for their first ever Ed Chynoweth title a season ago, it’s been a summer of movement across the WHL. Champions in 2024, the Medicine Hat Tigers continued to add to an already impressive roster while arguably the biggest move of the summer belonged to the Victoria Royals. Cameron Schmidt (Vancouver → Victoria) The biggest name on the move this summer in the WHL, and arguably in the CHL, Cameron Schmidt’s (DAL) trade to Victoria puts the Royals firmly in contender category as they chase a first WHL championship. Last season, between Seattle and Vancouver, Schmidt hit the 50-goal, 100-point plateau, the only player in the WHL to do so. The two previous seasons with the Giants, he tallied a combined 71 goals. In all, Schmidt has 123 goals and 237 points across three WHL seasons. Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today three rule changes for the 2026-27 WHL Regular Season, effective this Friday, September 18. The following rule changes are being implemented in the interest of enhancing the fan experience, enforcing speed of play, and ensuring scoring plays are ruled correctly. Raiders add Manitoba forward Kingerski in swap with Americans -
Prince Albert, Sask. — The 2026 Eastern Conference champion Prince Albert Raiders have added forward Carter Kingerski in a trade with the Tri-City Americans. In return, the Americans acquire a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2030 WHL Prospects Draft. Kingerski, 18, is preparing for his second full season in the league after breaking in with Tri-City in 2025-26. The 5-foot-10, 154-pound forward appeared in 45 contests, logging three goals (including a game-winning goal) and seven assists for 10 points. He made his debut on September 21, 2024, but spent the bulk of the season with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Winnipeg Freeze, where he registered 30 points (12G-18A) in 46 games. Hailing from Headingley, Man., Kingerski was selected by the Americans with the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft and won gold for Manitoba at the 2023 WHL Cup. Saskatoon, Sask. — The Regina Pats capped off a perfect preseason Saturday night, overcoming a wild third-period finish to defeat the Saskatoon Blades 7-6 in overtime at SaskTel Centre and finish the exhibition schedule with a 7-0 record. Cohen Klassen scored twice, including the overtime winner, while Logan Henry added two goals and Liam Pue recorded three assists to lead the Pats offensively. Zach Moore and Dayton Deschamps each added a goal and an assist in the victory. The Pats came out flying, building a 3-0 lead in the opening period. Saskatoon, SK – The Saskatoon Blades erased a 5-1 deficit to earn a point in Saturday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Regina Pats at SaskTel Centre. It was far from an ideal start to the Blue and Gold's final Western Hockey League (WHL) preseason game. The visitors went up 4-0 by the 5:37 mark of the second period thanks to goals from forward Mathis Paull, a pair from forward Logan Henry, and a tally from former Blade Zach Moore. 20-year-old winger Hunter Laing got the Bridge City Bunch on the board with a powerplay goal 12:32 into the middle frame. Martensville, SK native Kazden Mathies' secondary assist was the first of five points for the 19-year-old winger in the game. The win improved the Pats to 4-0-0 in the 2026 pre-season, as Regina rallied from a 4-1 hole to remain perfect through its first four exhibition games. Connor Bear provided the hometown heroics, scoring twice and adding an assist in front of his hometown crowd in Ochapowace First Nation. The 19-year-old forward scored the game-tying goal early in the third period before adding an empty-netter late in the contest to cap a three-point night. Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats will have two players attending NHL training camps this September, with Zach Lansard heading to Carolina Hurricanes camp and Parker Trottier joining the Montreal Canadiens. Lansard, 18, was selected by the Hurricanes in the third round (68th) of the 2026 NHL Draft and will become the third Regina Pats player drafted by Carolina since the franchise relocated from Hartford in 1997, joining Brett Lysak, selected in 1999, and Matej Trojovsky, selected in 2003. The Ste. Anne, Man., product took a significant step forward in his second WHL season after earning Pats Rookie of the Year honours in 2024-25. Lansard recorded seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 54 games as a rookie before breaking out offensively in 2025-26. He finished the season with 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points in 68 games, ranking third on the Pats in both goals and points.

The 2007-born blueliner was a workhorse in 11 postseason games, regularly averaging 30 minutes of ice time a night against opponents' top lines. Klimpke's play helped the sixth-seeded Blades upset the third-seeded Edmonton Oil Kings in Round 1 of the WHL Playoffs. The Florida Panthers selected 19-year-old Californian Brendan Dunphy in the seventh round of the 2025 NHL Draft at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. After going undrafted in 2024, the Panthers took Dunphy with the 197th pick after the physical defenseman scored four goals and added 18 assists in 47 games with the Western Hockey League’s Wenatchee Wild. He joined the club after startng the season in the BCHL with the Langley Rivermen (19 games, six assists) after the Wild acquired his rights from the Regina Pats. He finished his first (and only) year of major junior with 66 penalty minutes and a minus-nine rating. As is customary, Dunphy attended Florida’s annual development camp after he was drafted. He made the move to college hockey by enrolling at the University of Connecticut. The team has a longstanding partnership with the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre, a not-for-profit organization designed to help children, youth and families experiencing abuse seek help and find resources during difficult times. Luca Cagnoni Twenty-one-year-old Luca Cagnoni's second professional season saw the 5-foot-9, 181-pound defender take a slight step back in production, but find the tools he needs to make the NHL. Cagnoni put up 43 points (8G-35A) in 67 games, ranking fifth on the San Jose Barracuda in scoring and 10th among all AHL defencemen. Notably, 23 of those points (3G-20A) came on the man advantage. WHL Career Stats: 131 GP – 16 G-33 A – 49 points WHL Draft: Listed (Prince George Cougars) Nolan Chastko’s Western Hockey League career was defined by his willingness to do whatever his team needed. The Brandon, Man. product signed with the Prince George Cougars as an undrafted player in 2022 before eventually making his way to Everett, Wash. After making a fistful of preseason appearances with the Cougars, Chastko made his WHL debut on September 21, 2024, as a 19-year-old for the Silvertips. Harrison Brunicke Six-foot-3, 196-pound defenceman Harrison Brunicke skated into history in 2025-26 when he became the first South African-born skater to make his NHL debut. Brunicke, 20, ended up netting his first NHL goal in nine games with the Pens before getting more ice time with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
