RECAP: Hitmen Close Out Opening Week 3-0 -Calgary, AB – The Calgary Hitmen continued their perfect start to the season, extending their win streak to three games with 6-1 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings. It marks the first time Calgary has opened a season 3-0 since the 2015-16 campaign. Carter Sanderson returned to the lineup following Pittsburgh Penguins training camp and made an immediate impact, recording his first WHL goal and adding two assists for a three-point night. Artem Katsuro followed suit with a three-point performance of his own, scoring twice and adding an assist. Wyatt Pisarczyk opened the scoring in the first period, netting his first goal of the season on the power play. Edmonton’s Aaron Obobaifo answered with a power play goal of his own to even the score heading into the second period. Lethbridge opened a three-game homestand in their first of eight meetings against Red Deer this season after dropping a pair of games to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Opening Weekend. The game marked the return of former ‘Canes head coach Brent Kisio as bench boss of the Rebels. Calgary, Alta. - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped their first game in regulation this season on Friday night by a 6-1 score to the Calgary Hitmen. In the first period, Parker Snell had to be sharp for the Oil Kings as Edmonton was outshot 13-7 in the frame. Calgary would open the scoring with about five minutes to play on the powerplay as Wyatt Pisarczyk's shot found its way past Snell to make it 1-0. However, it took less than two minutes for the Oil Kings to respond on a powerplay of their own as a long shot from Aaron Obobaifo beat Eric Tu to tie the game, holding that way through 20 minutes. Calgary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period off goals from Brennan Brown just four minutes in and Hunter Aura with about 50 seconds to go in the first. While it looked like the game would stay 2-0 heading into the first intermission, the Oil Kings pushed to the final buzzer as Dylan Dean notched a powerplay goal with 0.8 seconds remaining on the clock to bring things to 2-1 after 20 minutes. In the second, the Oil Kings would tied the game almost halfway through as Noa Ta'amu, freshly returned from NHL Camp with the Winnipeg Jets, fired a wrister home for his first of the season to make it 2-2. But a little over a month ago his agent called and told him he had received an invite to the Colorado Avalanche rookie camp. All the 18-year-old native of Geneva, IL, did was show he deserved the invite. He played in a pair of games as part of a Rookie Showcase in San Jose, hitting the scoresheet in both games – a 7-2 win over Anaheim and a 6-5 shootout loss to Vegas. “I was definitely happy to get on the scoresheet,” he said after arriving back in Red Deer. “I got a couple of goals and a couple of assists. All he did was grab the attention of the coaching staff to the point they kept their eye on the talented six-foot-three, 185-pound netminder out of Edmonton. He played last season with the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the AJHL where he was solid in 34 games finishing with a 3.21 goals-against-average, a .902 save percentage and a 17-14-1 record. He was named to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s North All-Rookie Team. He impressed enough that the Rebels signed the 18-year-old on June 3. Salisbury returned to the Rebels camp this year and proved last year was no fluke, doing everything in his power, so far, to grab a spot on the club’s regular season roster. After the Hitmen took a 3-2 win over the Rebels Friday night this one saw Calgary win 3-2 again, this time in overtime. The Rebels racked up the game’s first seven shots on goal but were unable to solve Calgary netminder Aidan Hesse. Rebels starting netminder Matthew Kondro didn’t see a shot from Calgary until past the eight-minute mark, but it was a doozy as he was called upon to stop a breakaway from Ottawa Senators draft pick Blake Vanek. The Lockwood, Sask. product made his WHL debut on October 8, 2021, against the Vancouver Giants, and scored his first goal against the G-Men one month later. Over five seasons, Dumanski played a key role in establishing the Cougars as a B.C. Division powerhouse. He never missed the playoffs in his WHL career.
