Since Ben Pope suggested the Blackhawks put Anton Frondell on Connor Bedard‘s line as a center, I’ve seen plenty of mock lineups on social media projecting that with him on the wing. I’ve said this from the jump: I have no problem with Frondell being a center in the organization and staying there; his size is an asset down the middle. The Blackhawks just have to find the right wing combination for him — and Bedard. And I’ve consistently said (since July) that I want to see a line of Frondell between Tyler Bertuzzi and Patrick Kane. That doesn’t “fix” Bedard’s line, but I think it could be lethal. WENATCHEE, WA – The Prince George Cougars fired 42 shots and had multi-point nights from Townes Kozicky and Jett Lajoie, but it was not enough as the Wenatchee Wild erased a three-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Cougars 5-4 in a shootout in front of 2,174 fans at Town Toyota Center. Langley BC, - The Victoria Royals met the Vancouver Giants for the second time this season, this time at the Langley Events Centre. The Giants opened the scoring just 2:10 into the first period with a goal from Dennis Emesibe. Vancouver maintained its offensive pressure throughout the opening frame, adding four more goals to take a 5-0 lead into the first intermission. Vancouver extended its advantage in the second period as Mathis Preston found the back of the net, giving the Giants a 6-0 lead heading into the final frame. The Royals broke through at 5:19 of the third period when Cameron Schmidt found the back of the net off a feed from Nolan Stewart, putting Victoria on the scoreboard. WENATCHEE, WA - Sometimes, all you need is an opportunity. For Prince George Cougars rookie defenceman Ethan Popowich, that opportunity has turned into something special. Just a few months ago, the Edmonton, AB product wasn't entirely sure where his hockey journey would take him. Fast forward to the end of October, the 2008-born defenceman is an every-day player on the Cougar roster, he scored his first WHL goal, and has quickly made an impression on the Cougars' blue-line. And he is enjoying every minute of it. "It's a dream come true to play in this league, and I have been wanting to since I was young," said Popowich. "It feels really good to start helping out the team." Popowich's road to Prince George wasn't necessarily a conventional one. Coming off a championship season with the CAC Canadians of the AEHL, the young defenceman was originally preparing to attend training camp with the Vancouver Giants. Ladner B.C. – The Vancouver Giants are excited to announce the signing of 2008-born forward Dennis Emesibe (Calgary, Alta.) to a WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement. Emesibe, 18, was born in Calgary, but moved to Texas in 2019. He was listed by the Giants last season and made the 2026 roster out of training camp. Emesibe currently has one goal, two assists and a +3 rating in nine games for the Giants. PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Prince George Cougars are proud to announce that forward Cole Hajt has been named to NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch List ahead of the 2027 NHL Draft. Hajt, a product of El Segundo, California, has collected three points (2G-1A) in 11 games to begin the 2026-27 Western Hockey League season. The young forward is coming off an impressive week against Vancouver and Tri-City where he scored his first and second goal of the year in back to back games at the CN Centre. Regina, Sask. — Regina Pats forward Mathis Paull has been named to NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch List ahead of the 2027 NHL Draft, receiving a ‘C’ rating as a projected fourth- or fifth-round candidate. Paull, 17, is one of 54 WHL-developed players recognized on the list, which was unveiled Monday. The Vernon, B.C., product has recorded four points (2G-2A) in eight games with the Pats this season. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound left-shot forward is in his second season with Regina after tallying 13 points (7G-6A) in 55 games as a 16-year-old in 2025-26. His performance earned him the Nick Pappas Rookie of the Year Award as the Pats’ top rookie. Regina selected Paull in the third round, 48th overall, of the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft. NHL Central Scouting unveiled its Preliminary Players to Watch List Monday morning. Five players developed in the WHL have earned ‘A’ ratings, including defenceman Brock Cripps of the Prince Albert Raiders, forwards Noah Davidson of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Brock England of the Seattle Thunderbirds, and Kayden Stroeder of the Edmonton Oil Kings, along with defenceman Landon DuPont, who won a WHL Championship with the Everett Silvertips in 2026. Victoria BC – The Victoria Royals met the Kelowna Rockets for the second of two games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in a Saturday evening tilt. Tonight marked Royals captain Miles Cooper 200th career game played in the Western Hockey League. Miles Cooper celebrated the milestone by scoring 53 seconds into the first period from Cameron Schmidt and Odin Vauhkonen. Cameron Schmidt shot a laser at 18:23 into the period on the powerplay from Caleb Matthews and Nate Yellowaga. The scoring did not end there as Ashton Brown added another tally at 19:07, assisted by Nate Yellowaga and Ludovic Perreault. That’s been the painfully clear book on the Blackhawks this season: Chicago’s speed can be a problem, but they can get bullied. When they get pushed around, they lose focus — and the puck. PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Prince George Cougars opened their homestand with a 5-2 setback to the Vancouver Giants in front of 2,902 fans on Tuesday night at the CN Centre. The Cougars' record falls to 3-4-0-1, while the Giants improve to 7-2-2-1, collecting their fifth consecutive victory. The Giants opened the scoring just 62 seconds into the hockey game courtesy of a shorthanded tally from Jakob Oreskovic. Oreskovic flipped a shot from the right circle that found its way past goaltender Peyton Shore to make it 1-0. Shortly after, the Giants went to a five-on-three power play, but the Cougars did a terrific job limiting Vancouver's chances, killing off the two-man advantage to keep the score at 1-0. PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Prince George Cougars are pleased to announce that forward Jonathan Bitonti has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club. Bitonti, a 2008-born forward, earned a spot on the Cougars' 2026-27 roster after attending training camp as an invitee. The forward served as captain of the U18 Yale Hockey Academy program last season, recording 34 points (18G-16A) in 30 games. "Jonathan is such a great story," said Cougars Director of Player Personnel Bob Simmonds. "He came to camp as an invitee with one goal in mind: to make this team. He battled through every cut and earned his place on our roster. He is a tireless worker who never cheats himself, is extremely coachable, and is a tremendous teammate. I couldn't be happier for him." Bitonti has already appeared in two games with the Cougars during the 2026-27 season. Calgary, Alta. – Vancouver Giants netminder Burke Hood has been named Mary Brown's Chicken WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 18, the Western Hockey League announced Monday. Hood went 2-0-0-0 this past weekend with a 1.00 goals-against average and .975 save percentage, stopping 79 of 81 shots thrown his way in the two games. The 19-year-old New York Islanders prospect was named the first star in a 5-1 Giants win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday when he steered aside 39 of 40 shots. He followed it up with another first star performance on Saturday, stopping 40 of 41 shots thrown his way in another 5-1 victory. The only two goals he allowed were power play markers. Calgary, Alta. – Seventeen Western Hockey League players will represent Hockey Canada at the 2026 U17 World Challenge. Hockey Canada announced the 44 players named to the rosters for Canada Red and Canada White on Wednesday morning. The 2026 U17 World Challenge is scheduled for November 1-7 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ont. Regina Pats forwards Liam Pue and Maddox Schultz return to represent Canada for the second consecutive year after helping Canada White to a silver medal at the 2025 U17 World Challenge. Both Pue and Schultz also represented Canada at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, helping the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team claim gold in Edmonton. The 2026 U17 World Challenge will see Pue and Schultz split, with Pue representing Canada Red and Schultz skating for Canada White.

Ladner B.C. – The Vancouver Giants are excited to announce the signing of 2007-born defenceman Ethan Armstrong (Tsawwassen, B.C.) to a WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement. Armstrong, 19 was born in Toronto, but currently lives in Tsawwassen. He joined the Giants following training camp and scored in his first WHL game on Sept. 26. Armstrong currently has two goals, two assists and a +4 rating in eight games for the Giants. The strong representation from across the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL on both Canadian rosters further underscores the CHL’s central role in Canada’s elite player pathway. The two teams travel back to Kent Tuesday for a third straight meeting. Game time at the accesso ShoWare Center is 7:05 p.m. Vancouver scored on their very first shot of the night at 1:07 of the opening period. The T-Birds (2-3-0-0) got it back to even with a Brock England goal at the 13:20 mark, assisted by Noah Kosick and Antonio Martorana. It was England’s second goal in as many games. But with the period winding down the Giants popped in what turned out to be the game winner at 19:58. Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers have sent 2006-born forward Cam Parr to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2027 and a fourth-round pick in 2030. Parr, the 5-foot-10 left-winger from La Salle, Manitoba has played 233 games in the WHL. He was acquired via trade at the start of the 2025-26 campaign from the Spokane Chiefs after spending three seasons there. Parr's impact was immediate as his energy was hard to miss on the ice. In the first round of the 2026 playoffs, Parr scored the overtime winner in Game 5 to win the series against the Regina Pats. He has played 37 playoff games in his career, including a trip to the WHL Finals in 2025. Brandon’s Jaxon Jacobson scored the game’s first goal late in the second period before the Giants tied the contest 1-1 late in the third courtesy of Kaleb Hartmann. So many important memories in Mavrik Turnbull's short life revolved around hockey. There was his first game at two months old at the CN Centre in Prince George, and soon, many more, with the toddler peeking above the crowd as he perched on his dad's shoulders for walks around the concourse. There were fist bumps as he leaned over the railing to greet the Cougars as they emerged from the tunnel, and mini stick battles so fierce that he wore down the plastic sticks until his parents had to seek out carbon fibre models. When he was diagnosed with cancer and started taxing rounds of treatment, he leaned on those same mini sticks for support as he built up his strength to walk again. There were puck drops and behind-the-scenes visits to hockey teams around the Lower Mainland near the B.C. Children's Hospital. Broncos Cruise to 5-1 Victory Over Giants -
The Swift Current Broncos picked up a convincing 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre, earning their first win of their B.C. Division road trip. Vancouver opened the scoring at 7:09 of the first period when Tobias Tomik scored shorthanded to give the Giants an early 1-0 advantage. The lead lasted just 1:37 as the Broncos answered at 8:46. Hudson Kibblewhite scored his first goal of the season, with Hyde Davidson and Sawyer Dingman picking up the assists, to tie the game at one. Swift Current took the lead later in the opening period. Kayd Ruedig scored his third goal of the season at 16:40, finishing a setup from Oliver Torkki and Carter Moen to give the Broncos a 2-1 advantage. Ruedig's goal would stand as the game-winner. Vancouver outshot Swift Current 14-12 in the opening period, but the Broncos carried a one-goal lead into the intermission. The Giants record now sits at 2-2-1-0 through five games, while the Broncos improve to 3-2-0-0. Vancouver's only goal of the game came from Tobias Tomik (2nd) at the 7:09 mark of the first period.
