Three reigning champions will open the season in celebration. A new generation will take the spotlight. And after more than 2,000 regular-season games across the WHL, OHL and QMJHL, three playoff roads will converge in Guelph for the 107th Memorial Cup presented by Kubota. The countdown is nearly over. One week from today, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) will open the 2026–27 season on Thursday, Sept. 17, before the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL) get underway Friday, Sept. 18. Opening weekend will quickly turn attention to the rafters as the Kitchener Rangers, Chicoutimi Saguenéens and Everett Silvertips raise championship banners. The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is deeply saddened by the news that Brent Peterson, our former player, captain, and head coach, has passed away. Brent was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2002 and started the Peterson Foundation for Parkinson’s in 2009 to help enhance and support the lives of people with the disease.  He had a tremendous impact on our organization as a player from 1976-1978, a Memorial Cup-winning head coach, and Winterhawks Hall of Fame inductee.  Brent’s always-positive personality brought joy, smiles, and laughter to everyone he interacted with. He loved his family, was passionate about hockey, and deeply cared for everyone. Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club announced today the reassignment of goaltender Cooper Dryden, forward Easton Scott, and forward Cullen Stephenson ahead of the 2026-27 WHL Season. Dryden, of Brandon, Manitoba, will continue his season with the Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA team. The netminder was picked 130th overall in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft. Scott, from San Antonio, Texas, will play for the Dallas Stars 16U AAA squad. Scott was taken with the 97th pick in the 5th round of the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft. Stephenson will now play his year with Saskatoon Contacts U18 AAA. The Florida Panthers selected burgeoning power forward Shea Busch in the fourth round (128th overall) of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft at Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. During his draft season, Busch split his time between the Vernon Vipers of the BJHL, where he played the year prior, and the WHL’s Everett Silvertips. In 22 games with the Vipers, Busch totaled 12 goals and five assists. His numbers in Everett were a respectable 11 goals and eight assists in 39 games. It was his performance in the postseason that really caught the interest of the scouting community as Busch produced six goals and 11 points in 13 games as the Silvertips dispatched the Seattle Thunderbirds in six, he scored five times in that series, before falling to the Portland Winterhawks in seven.
