O to Pros: NHL Season in Review -
From record-setting performances, standout rookie campaigns and debuts, Ontario Hockey League (OHL) alumni continued to make their mark across the NHL throughout the 2025-26 regular season. Here’s a look at some of the top performances from former OHL players at hockey’s highest level: Scoring Leaders Forward Scoring Leader – Connor McDavid (Erie Otters/Edmonton Oilers) McDavid once again set the standard offensively, leading the NHL with 138 points while also pacing the league with 90 assists. The Oilers captain extended his streak of 100-point seasons to six, further cementing his place among the game’s elite. The 100-Point Club Only eight players reached the 100-point plateau in the NHL this season, and three of them are OHL graduates. WHL Stars & NHL Debuts: WHL Champion Yager cleared for takeoff in first match with Jets -
The Winnipeg Jets may be in refueling mode one season after taking home the Presidents' Trophy as NHL regular-season champions, but Brayden Yager is ready for takeoff. The Prince Albert-born, Saskatoon-raised forward took his first NHL strides under the bright lights of Las Vegas's T-Mobile Arena on Monday night. "Everybody has kind of come up to me and congratulated me and are just saying enjoy it," Yager said prior to the match. "You only get your first game once, so go out there, have fun, compete and just enjoy it." While the Jets were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention with a 6-2 loss to the 2023 Stanley Cup Champions, Yager showed plenty of promise with one shot and 17 shifts in 10:25 of ice time, while skating on a line with WHL great Nino Niederreiter, who surpassed 1,000 NHL games earlier this season. With two games left on the regular season slate, Jets alternate captain and Penticton Vees part-owner Mark Scheifele sees plenty of opportunity ahead for Yager

WHL Stars & NHL Debuts: Winterhawks grad Alscher logs heavy minutes for Panthers -
Two seasons after reaching the WHL Championship Series in the Rose City, Florida Panthers defenceman Marek Alscher made his NHL debut in Canada's capital with the reigning Stanley Cup Champions. The 22-year-old took his first strides in the big show on Thursday night. https://twitter.com/FlaPanthers/status/2042371499089166539 Though the Panthers would fall to the surging Ottawa Senators 4-1, Alscher had a strong showing with two shots, a block, a hit and an even rating in 19:28 of ice time. "It’s sweet and sour," Alscher told reporters. “First NHL game, that’s big for me. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to win, which... that'd be awesome, but like I said, sweet and sour." Two-time Stanley Cup-winning Head Coach Paul Maurice had high praise for the rookie, who debuted alongside another defender, Ludvig Jansson. "First game, and he played almost 20 minutes," Maurice assessed. "They've got a lot of speed on their team. Really, really happy with his game. I think Marek got a little mor

SERIES PREVIEW: Kelowna Rockets vs. Everett Silvertips -
On paper, it wouldn't be crazy to see this series as a potential Memorial Cup matchup. The regular-season champion Everett Silvertips are coming off the winningest season in franchise history, while the Kelowna Rockets have caught fire as they prepare to host the 2026 Memorial Cup. Both teams are coming off statement first-round sweeps. Everett found some playoff absolution by downing the rival Portland Winterhawks, who had eliminated the Silvertips for the last three years. Kelowna flexed just how far their group has come by taking out their longtime foes, the Kamloops Blazers. The Silvertips are tied for most playoff goals in 2026 with 25, though no skater has more than four (a credit belonging to Seattle Kraken prospect Julius Miettinen). A staggering 14 Everett skaters have lit the lamp, including draft-eligible Matias Vanhanen, the WHL's first exceptional-status defenceman, Landon DuPont, and Florida Panthers prospect Shea Busch, who scored in his return to the lineup after

Carlsberg WHL Alumni Spotlight: Former Winterhawks star Johansen retires following 13 NHL seasons -
Former Portland Winterhawks star Ryan Johansen is hanging up the skates following 13 seasons in the NHL. The 33-year-old product of Vancouver, B.C., called it a career March 18, 2026. After being selected by the Winterhawks in the seventh round (150th overall) of the 2007 WHL Draft, the 6-foot-3, 218-pound centre spent two seasons in the WHL, including his NHL Draft season. The 2009-10 campaign helped Johansen bolster his draft stock as he tallied 25 goals and 69 points in 71 games with the Winterhawks. The following summer, the Columbus Blue Jackets used the fourth-overall selection in the 2010 NHL Draft to pick Johansen. Returning to the WHL for 2010-11, Johansen showed that the Blue Jackets made the right call. He exploded for 40 goals and 92 points in 63 games with the Winterhawks, earning a place on the WHL’s Western Conference First All-Star Team. Though they fell short, the Winterhawks advanced to the WHL Championship Series against the Koot

How's that for Round One revenge? After three straight years of being eliminated by the Portland Winterhawks, the Everett Silvertips returned the favour by sweeping their Pacific Northwest rivals in Round One of the 2026 WHL Playoffs presented by Nutrien. Everett closed out the series with a 6-3 decision in Portland on Wednesday night. Forward Zackary Shantz recorded a three-point night (1G-2A) as the Silvertips scored six unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and send the Winterhawks packing. Nathan Free and Nathan Brown combined to give Portland a 2-0 advantage, before three straight Everett goals turned the tables in the second period. The 'Tips tacked on three more to start the third period, taking complete control of the contest. The regular-season champions were hot out of the gates with an 8-1 slugfest in Game 1, with Philadelphia Flyers prospect Luke Vlooswyk netting three assists. SERIES PREVIEW: (8) Portland Winterhawks vs. (1) Everett Silvertips -
Is this the year the Everett Silvertips change the narrative? The back-to-back Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy winners have long dominated the regular season and never missed the postseason since joining the WHL back in 2003-04. But for all the success and accolades the Silvertips have enjoyed, they've yet to lift the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions. Now, fresh off a 57-win regular season, the Tips will seek revenge against the very team that doused their title hopes in 2025- the Portland Winterhawks. Portland, while entering as the eighth seed, has qualified for the posteason every year since 2009, a remarkable run that includes winning it all in 2013 and five trips to the Championship Series. The Hawks downed the Silvertips in six games in 2025 to move on to the Western Conference Championship, and, despite their underdog status in 2025-26, managed to split the regular season series against their rivals (though two of their wins came in overtime and a shootout). It's been a while. For the first time since 1971, WHL clubs in Edmonton and Saskatoon will clash in the WHL Playoffs. While the original Oil Kings franchise moved to Portland, this 2026 WHL Playoffs matchup sees the Blades and Oil Kings face off for the first time since Edmonton returned to the Dub as an expansion team in 2007-08. The third-seed Oil Kings come in with something to prove after seeing a 3-1 series lead against Prince Albert evaporate in Round One of the 2025 postseason, while the Blades are gunning to advance to the second round for the first time since advancing to Game 7 of the 2024 WHL Eastern Conference Championship. Blades alternate captain Rowan Calvert remembers that run all too well and will look to make an impact in his final trip to the playoffs. Calvert, 20, led Saskatoon with a career-best 31 tallies this season, while towering Calgary Flames prospect Hunter Laing and 2026 NHL Draft-eligible Cooper Williams also surpassed 20 goals on the season.
