From Banner Nights to Guelph: 12 Events and Storylines to Circle on the 2026–27 Calendar - 
Three reigning champions will open the season in celebration. A new generation will take the spotlight. And after more than 2,000 regular-season games across the WHL, OHL and QMJHL, three playoff roads will converge in Guelph for the 107th Memorial Cup presented by Kubota. The countdown is nearly over. One week from today, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) will open the 2026–27 season on Thursday, Sept. 17, before the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL) get underway Friday, Sept. 18. Opening weekend will quickly turn attention to the rafters as the Kitchener Rangers, Chicoutimi Saguenéens and Everett Silvertips raise championship banners. Eight months later, the season will culminate in Guelph, where one team from the WHL, OHL or QMJHL will capture the 107th Memorial Cup presented by Kubota and stand atop major junior hockey.

Elite Prospects names 39 CHL players in 2027 NHL Draft Preseason Top 64 - 
A total of 39 CHL players have been named in Elite Prospect's 2027 NHL Draft ranking and players to watch list. The list is led by Everett's Landon DuPont who earlier this summer captained Canada to gold at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and helped the Silvertips to its first WHL title last season. Hurricanes Drop 4-1 Decision to Rebels on Thursday - 
Lethbridge, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes suffered their third-straight loss to open the exhibition season on Thursday with a 4-1 defeat to the Red Deer Rebels at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena. Lethbridge wrapped up their home portion of the 2026 WHL Pre-Season against Red Deer in their only match-up in the exhibition season. A total of five Hurricanes made their pre-season debuts in the game in the game including Leif Oaten, Nathan Maloney, Kade Duell, Kai Anderson and Carsen Adair. Lethbridge had a pair of early chances to open the scoring including a Dawson Spence breakaway, but he was unable to lift a shot over the sprawled left pad of Rebels netminder Nathan Salisbury. Quickly after the Spence chance, Cohen Pentney was denied in tight on a centering pass from Tyden Lafournaise as the game remained scoreless past the midway point of the opening period. Calgary, AB – The Calgary Hitmen opened up the 2026 preseason with a 3-2 win over the visiting Red Deer Rebels at Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on Friday night. Julien Maze opened the scoring just 22 seconds in the game to grab the first goal of the preseason, assisted by fellow returning player Landon Amrhein and Hunter Aura. Red Deer would get on the board less than 10 minutes later with a goal from Calgary native Luke Jamieson. Teague McGlynn would return the lead to Calgary just over the midway point of the first period. Luc Trevors evened the score for Red Deer once again. Rebels drop preseason opener to Hitmen - 
Tsuut'ina Nation, AB – The Red Deer Rebels kicked off preseason play Friday night as they took on the Calgary Hitmen at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex. The Rebels iced a young lineup for this one featuring only six regulars from last year’s club. They battled the Hitmen hard before giving up a late goal in a 3-2 loss. Calgary opened the scoring early as Julien Maze, their leading scorer last season, beat starting Rebels netminder Peyton Shore up high 22 seconds into the game. The Rebels replied at the 8:44 mark when Calgary kid Luke Jamieson capped off a pretty 3-on-2 rush with Owen DeWitt and Nolan Schmidt. Teague McGlynn scored a breakaway goal for Calgary a few minutes later to give the Hitmen a one-goal lead after 20. Neither team found the back of the net in an evenly played second period. WHL mourns passing of Barry Melrose - 
Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Barry Melrose, longtime ESPN hockey analyst and a WHL alumnus. Melrose passed away Wednesday at the age of 70. He retired from ESPN after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2023. Prior to becoming a star on ESPN’s coverage of the NHL, Melrose got his start in the WHL. Hailing from Kelvington, Sask., Melrose patrolled the blueline for two seasons with the Kamloops Chiefs (1974-75 to 1975-76) before making the jump to pro hockey. With the Chiefs, Melrose enjoyed a career year in 1975-76, tallying 61 points (12G-49A) in 72 games. Following 10 seasons of pro hockey, including 300 NHL games played, Melrose retired and moved into coaching. Once again, he got his start in the WHL. Melrose led the Medicine Hat Tigers during the 1987-88 season, guiding the Club to a record of 44-22-6. From there, Melrose’s Tigers marched through the WHL Playoffs to win their se
