One season after reaching the WHL Championship Series, the Spokane Chiefs are ready to battle for WHL supremacy once again. The U.S. Division club locked up one of the last remaining playoff berths in the conference with a 7-2 mauling of the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night. Seven different Chiefs skaters lit the lamp, highlighted by Tyus Sparks' game-winner, while Carter Esler steered aside 22 of 24 shots for the victory. Six Spokane skaters have eclipsed 20 goals in 2025-26, including power forward Chase Harrington, who has hit 26 goals and 100 penalty minutes while increasing his stock ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft. Harrington brings valuable championship experience from the 2025 run, along with his fellow alternate captain and Winnipeg Jets prospect Owen Martin, who owns 25 tallies and six game-winners. Saskatoon, Sask.- The Saskatchewan Huskies have captured back-to-back Canada West championships. Twenty-seven Western Hockey League alumni helped the Dogs hoist the Dr. W.G. Hardy Trophy on Saturday night- including 16 skaters who were a part of the 2025 championship Huskies squad. Saskatchewan defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 5-0 and 4-2 in the title series sweep. Rookie U Sask goaltender Nolan Maier was named Championship MVP after allowing just two goals on 63 shots in two outings, including a 33-save shutout in Game 1. Maier, 25, is the second-winningest goaltender in WHL history with 122 regular-season victories with the Saskatoon Blades. "It's special," Huskies bench boss Brandin Cote told Mount Royal reporter Ethan Bomhof postgame. "It's hard to win, and it's harder to repeat." Mutala, 24, led the conference with 46 points (14G-32A) in 28 games, earning the Dave 'Sweeney' Schriner Scoring Trophy. https://twitter.com/CanadaWest/status/2029617940778377722 His 32 helpers set a new program record, while his 137 career points have tied him for fourth in all-time scoring by a UBC player. The 6-foot, 201-pound forward is the first Thunderbird to bring home the Dave 'Sweeney' Schriner Trophy since 1985. The Vancouver, B.C. product was named 2025 November/December WHL Grad of the Month, and has also has nabbed his first First Team All-Star recognition after making the Second All-Star Team twice and the All-Rookie Team in 2023. Mutala won gold at the 2025 FISU Games and helped the T-Birds win the team’s first program championship in 53 years with a dominant run in 2023-24.
