The marvelous Sean McIndoe dropped a fresh edition of his Red Light Newsletter at The Athletic on Thursday. There wasn’t a lot of Blackhawks-specific content in it, but there was some fascinating and valuable minutiae in it that is worth sharing. McIndoe was asked if offer sheets could include other elements, specifically a no-trade or no-move clause. The answer to that is yes. Even if an offer sheet does not include one, the player can’t be traded for a full year if the initial team matches. But offer sheets can afford a player that option. Which brings us to his next point, which brought up Connor Bedard‘s new contract with the Blackhawks.

Blackhawks History: Expansion Draft Losses -Â
With the NHL continuing to talk about expansion, the Blackhawks might need to start considering who they might protect in a future expansion draft. As talks progress around potential ownership groups in Texas and potentially Atlanta, Arizona or Quebec, the Blackhawks are still trying to build the core of a competitive team. That won’t make things easy if/when the time comes to decide which players are deemed “untouchable.” Which brings us to today’s Blackhawks history lesson. Since the Gary Bettman-led NHL started to aggressively expand 35 years ago, the Blackhawks have been forced to make similar choices. There have been some tough decisions made. And, in one instance, there was a crazy game played with a goaltender in net for Chicago who wouldn’t appear in another NHL game. Going all the way back to the Sharks joining the NHL in 1991, here’s the Blackhawks’ history of losing players to NHL expansion.

That Time A Blackhawks Trade Included Eddie Olczyk and⊠a Baseball Hall of Famer? -Â
Welcome to the long days of summer, Blackhawks fans. I’ve been deep in my offseason bag lately, and came across a nugget that just felt too fun to not share. Some fans might remember the Blackhawks and Kings made a big trade at the 1984 NHL Draft so the Hawks could move up from pick No. 6 to No. 3 and keep the local kid, Eddie Olczyk, in Chicago. The full deal was: Blackhawks receive: No. 3 overall pick in the 1984 NHL Draft (Eddie Olczyk) a fourth-round pick (No. 66) in the 1984 NHL Draft (Tom Eriksson) Kings receive:

Employing Hindsight in Considering Blackhawks Prospect Evaluations, Pipeline Evolution -Â
The beauty of doing this job as long as I have is the ability to employ some hindsight. I’ve been writing about the Blackhawks long enough that I can remember (and admit to being wrong about) players like Dylan Olsen, Adam Clendening, Ian Mitchell, Chris Calnan and Radovan Bondra. The Jeremy Morin Era of Blackhawks prospects was real, folks. And it wasn’t pretty. We’ve spent most of the past four years here talking about Blackhawks prospects and the youth movement being authored by Kyle Davidson. Since he was named the interim general manager in Chicago on Oct. 27, 2021, Davidson has gone about the tasks of tearing the Blackhawks down to the studs, accumulating a stunning amount of draft capital and then building a pipeline of tal

Frondellâs Summer, Self-Awareness and Assessment, College Defense, and Other Blackhawks Bullets -Â
Welcome to the second week of August, Blackhawks fans! There will be kids (and teachers) heading back to school this week. There will be football and cross country and soccer and golf (and whatever other sports happen in the fall) practices happening. Life is starting to turn the page to the fall, which means were’ that much closer to putting on jeans and a sweatshirt and heading to the rink to see hockey. And I’m here for that! Ben Pope gave us a nice piece over the weekend that looks at how Blackhawks center Anton Frondell is preparing for his first full pro season on this side of the Atlantic. If you’ve seen some of the clips I’ve shared here from Instagram over the past couple months, Frondell has been hard at work in a few places in Europe with other Swedish players getting ready for the coming season. Pope notes Frondell, William Eklund (Senators) and Victor Eklund (Islanders) and Viggo Björck hav

Yesterday I wrote a piece about the Blackhawks’ jersey retirement process in light of the Los Angeles Kings announcing they will put AnĆŸe Kopitar’s No. 11 in the rafters this coming season. But there was a Chicago hook in there as well. On Saturday, the White Sox permanently took Ozzie GuillĂ©n’s No. 13 out of circulation. I know at Bleacher Nation we don’t spend much/any time on the White Sox, but I remember one Blackhawks game back in the day when Ozzie was sitting along the glass. They showed him on the scoreboard once, and he got a predictable mix of boos and cheers. I would say it was about 60-40 boos. The camera moved on to a few other fans before coming back to Ozzie, who

Blackhawks Trade Tree(s) Tuesday: From Andrew Shaw to Bowen Byram -Â
When the Chicago Blackhawks drafted an undersized, overage Andrew Shaw in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, there wasn’t a lot of thought about him becoming an important part of two Stanley Cup championship teams and a fan favorite. You usually don’t find those guys falling to the 139th overall selection. But Shaw became that guy, authoring some iconic moments that included a header and loving shin pads. He emerged as a guy the Blackhawks needed at a time when they didn’t have a lot coming up thru the organization to help sustain their core. Shaw was eventually traded to the Canadiens, and then he became one of the guys who was brought back to the organization for a second run by Stan Bowman. That didn’t play out as well as anyone h

Korchinski and Rinzel, Nazar and Fantilli, Sneaky Draft Value, and Other Blackhawks Bullets -Â
A lot of questions recently in the comments here and on social media about the future of Kevin Korchinski with the Blackhawks, so a question from me: what happens if he out-performs Sam Rinzel in training camp? I don’t think that’s a crazy potential scenario; it could happen. Ian Cole was brought in because he has experience playing both sides, and Korchinski spent a fair amount of time on the right side in Rockford last year. I’ll go a step further: if Rinzel spends some time in Rockford this coming season, I wouldn’t be overwhelmingly disappointed and I wouldn’t consider that a career-ending, trajectory-ruining move for the player or the organization. For all of the reasons I have said Korchinski isn’t a finished product — Rinzel isn’t, either. Also: Rinzel can go to the AHL without requiring waivers; Korchinski (and Ethan Del Mastro) need to c

Al Secord: A True Blackhawks Unicorn -Â
Let’s talk about some true unicorns in Blackhawks history. Guys who could do it… all? Players who scored goals enough to be a legit offensive threat and still handled their business on the ice. The old school power forward feels like a bit of a dinosaur in today’s NHL. It’s been more than 30 years since the Blackhawks had a player score at least 30 goals and pile up at least 100 penalty minutes. The last time: Jeremy Roenick and Joe Murphy both filled the box score (and the penalty box) during the 1993-94 season. The Blackhawks aren’t the only franchise that hasn’t seen those numbers on the back of a hockey card in some time, however. Over the past four NHL seasons across the entire NHL, there have

Scott Powers at The Athletic wrote a fun story about a couple new additions to the Blackhawks organ-I-zation this summer, Bowen Byram and Connor Mackey. Mackey didn’t get as much written about his two-year deal with the Blackhawks as Byram’s then-franchise-record contract generated, but the two share something in common other than being new members of the roster: both of their dads played for the Blackhawks. Blue Line Mentors, Reconsidering the 2011 Draft, Islesâ Jerseys, and Other Blackhawks Bullets -Â
We’ve talked a lot about the Blackhawks’ blue line over the past few weeks here. The front office and coaches have talked about building the team from the back forward. Kyle Davidson used a couple first-round picks on Sam Rinzel and then Artyom Levshunov to be big pieces on the back, but the group was so young after the trade deadline there were viable concerns about the makeup. Which is why Davidson added Bowen Byram and Ian Cole this summer. In those two, the Blackhawks added unique skills to their defensive group and championship experience; Byram (one) and Cole (two) have ring(s) at home. In thinking about the value those two will add to the Blackhawks this year, I went back to
