Jedi Council -
Quick Hits as We Prepare to Kick Off the Season We are getting close, Sabres fans. Off the heels of their first playoff appearance in forever, the 2026-27 season is inching closer. Many NHL pundits, YouTubers and NHL fans are expecting a drop-off from Buffalo. I do too—to an extent. I doubt the Sabres reach 109 points again, but I still expect them to be a good, competitive team and probably finish second or third in the Atlantic Division. Look around elsewhere, though, and you will see some much more pessimistic predictions. Fourth place seems to be the common expectation, with some projections dropping Buffalo all the way to seventh. The losses of Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram certainly factor into that, but I think there is also a widespread belief that last season was simply a one-year fluke. Well, let’s see what the Blue and Gold have in store for us. Hockey is almost upon us again. As the season approaches, here are a few

The time is now -
The Sabres’ window to win is wide open. They can’t afford to waste it again. The Sabres need to stop treating their best chance to win as something always a few years away. With Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin under contract, the foundation is already here. Buffalo should be building a team capable of competing for a Stanley Cup while those deals are in place. Every season spent waiting for the perfect roster is another season lost. Thompson carries a cap hit of roughly $7.14 million through 2029–30, while Dahlin is signed at $11 million annually through 2031–32. That gives Buffalo four more seasons with both players on their current contracts. Four seasons can sound like plenty of time, until one becomes another development year and the next becomes another year spent fixing the same problems. The Sabres need to approach that stretch with a clear expectation of winning.

Bruins season preview: Five key questions that will define 2026-27 -
The Boston Bruins exceeded most expectations last season by winning 45 games and earning 100 points to make the playoffs after finishing with the NHL’s fifth-worst record the year before. It was an impressive turnaround by the B’s, but now the hard part has arrived. Can they build on that success and maintain their status as a playoff team? The Atlantic Division figures to be ultra competitive, especially with the Florida Panthers — who were decimated by injuries last season — healthy again and having a better roster after trading for Brady Tkachuk. The Bruins

No. 16 Zack Ostapchuk: Finding a place on the fourth line -
Last year, when we checked in with Zack Ostapchuk, the kid had some potential, but it was hard to say what he was going to bring to the San Jose Sharks. There was size and grit, but not a whole lot going on in terms of ability to drive play or contribute to an impactful, checking fourth line. He was still young and finding his place in the NHL. Fast forward to this past season, when Ostapchuk found a way to earn his place in the Sharks lineup. Through a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, he solidified himself as one of the fourth-liners for the Sharks and finished the season with 59 games played. While his impact on the scoresheet, 7 points (4 G, 3 A) isn’t something to write home about, he contributed to the game in other ways. Despite averaging just 10:06 minutes per game last season, his goals above replacement percentile, according to Evolving-Hockey is 41.0%. It’s not great considering one of the least impactful forwards on the Sharks last sea

Winnipeg Jets Training Camp Kicks Off -
With the disappointing 2025-26 campaign now starting to fade into history, our Winnipeg Jets have gathered once again for another National Hockey League season. While the players were off doing whatever they do in the summer, us True North fans were left to take in rumours & then a confirmation that starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck wants to move on from the only NHL franchise he has ever played for. Despite the almost never-ending chatter from the media about a pending trade that has ran since the 2026 Entry Draft to date….nothing has actually occurred on that front. While I certainly could go on to outline the background of why Hellebuyck & the Jets have come to this point, as well as offer my opinion on the whole situation…..I won’t bother. It is a brand new year and I have chosen to focus on who will be in attendance when the skating part of training camp opens up tomorrow at the Hockey For All Centre. Winnipeg’s c

Sharks off-season review: San Jose gets better thanks to some luck and good drafting -
The San Jose Sharks are going to be one of the better teams in the National Hockey League sooner rather than later. After years of contention from the early noughties until the late 2010s, the Sharks bottomed out and were one of the worst teams in the league. Well, that was until last season. After finishing at or near the bottom of the league from 2019-20 until 2024-25, the Sharks missed the 2026 playoffs by just four points.  And they’ve only gotten better this past off-season. Big News Day Coming, Spellacy Impresses, Extensions, and Other Blackhawks Bullets -
The Blackhawks prospects played a game last night. They will play a game this afternoon. But I think the most attention will come around 1 PM CT today when the Blackhawks host a season opening press conference at the United Center. Could the Hawks have a new captain in place before the game begins at 4 this afternoon? We’ll see! You can watch the presser on CHSN or listen on WGN Radio. I said it last night and I’ll say it again here: AJ Spellacy is ready for the NHL. From where he was as a very raw prospect that impressed enough to be one of the last cuts in NHL camp (without a contract) a couple years ago to the player he was last night is

It is September 15 and while that is almost a nothing date on the hockey calendar for most years, it is an extremely significant one for this year. For right now. While there are already some new rules in place, such as the playoff cap and the new limit for the Long-Term Injured Reserve cap overage, all of them will come into effect when the day is over. Most of them don’t really matter all that much and this big changeover won’t have any repercussions that NHL teams haven’t already figured out — but there is one where we are seeing a sle

OUR 18 – Sea Dogs hope the secret to success has finally arrived -
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Saint John Sea Dogs’ last league title. It also marks a decade since the organization’s last playoff series win. Although there has been the 2022 Memorial Cup – won as the tournament hosts – to boast about, the time for an extended postseason run is long overdue in the Port City. The organization has made significant strides to ensure this is on the horizon. There’s plenty of familiarity at the top of a lineup that featured a respectable offense in 2025-26. Last year’s leading scorer in Saint John, Olivier Groulx, is back for more. 2025 QMJHL first overall selection Alexis Joseph is ready to put together a performance that is sure to turn scouts’ heads leading into the 2027 NHL Entry Draft. Alexander Donovan also returns following an impressive 25-goal first-year campaign. Dylan Rozzi and Zachary Morin are preparing to step into more veteran roles. Buffalo Sabres sign Noah Ostlund to long-term extension -
With training camp just around the corner, the Buffalo Sabres announced that young forward Noah Ostlund has inked an eight-year extension with an AAV of $6.6 million. This represents a handsome raise for the 22-year-old who has seen his role with the Sabres grow in the last couple of seasons, with Ostlund entering the last year of his current three-year deal an AAV of just $886,666. Ostlund played in eight games in Buffalo in the 2024-25 season but became indispensable with the Rochester Americans, going 45GP 19G 17A 36pts. However, last season he made the step up and scored 3G and 7A in ten games for the Amerks, but spent the majority of the time with the Sabres playing in 60 games, with 11G and 16A for 27 points in all. It was in the playoffs though that he made the biggest impression, and irreversibly turned the series against the Boston Bruins in the Sabres favor in just three games before he went out injured.
