Quick Hits as We Prepare to Kick Off the Season We are getting close, Sabres fans. Off the heels of their first playoff appearance in forever, the 2026-27 season is inching closer. Many NHL pundits, YouTubers and NHL fans are expecting a drop-off from Buffalo. I do too—to an extent. I doubt the Sabres reach 109 points again, but I still expect them to be a good, competitive team and probably finish second or third in the Atlantic Division. Look around elsewhere, though, and you will see some much more pessimistic predictions. Fourth place seems to be the common expectation, with some projections dropping Buffalo all the way to seventh. The losses of Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram certainly factor into that, but I think there is also a widespread belief that last season was simply a one-year fluke. With Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin under contract, the foundation is already here. Buffalo should be building a team capable of competing for a Stanley Cup while those deals are in place. Every season spent waiting for the perfect roster is another season lost. Thompson carries a cap hit of roughly $7.14 million through 2029–30, while Dahlin is signed at $11 million annually through 2031–32. That gives Buffalo four more seasons with both players on their current contracts. Four seasons can sound like plenty of time, until one becomes another development year and the next becomes another year spent fixing the same problems. The Sabres need to approach that stretch with a clear expectation of winning.

Last year, when we checked in with Zack Ostapchuk, the kid had some potential, but it was hard to say what he was going to bring to the San Jose Sharks. There was size and grit, but not a whole lot going on in terms of ability to drive play or contribute to an impactful, checking fourth line. He was still young and finding his place in the NHL. Fast forward to this past season, when Ostapchuk found a way to earn his place in the Sharks lineup. Through a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, he solidified himself as one of the fourth-liners for the Sharks and finished the season with 59 games played. While his impact on the scoresheet, 7 points (4 G, 3 A) isn’t something to write home about, he contributed to the game in other ways. Christini, of Collegeville, PA, was originally selected in the 10th round, 201st overall by the Bulldogs in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection Draft and has been a standout since arriving. Christini’s performace shouldn’t be too surprising following a tremendous pair of seasons with the Bishop Kearney Selects at the 14U & 15U levels. With training camp just around the corner, the Buffalo Sabres announced that young forward Noah Ostlund has inked an eight-year extension with an AAV of $6.6 million. This represents a handsome raise for the 22-year-old who has seen his role with the Sabres grow in the last couple of seasons, with Ostlund entering the last year of his current three-year deal an AAV of just $886,666. Ostlund played in eight games in Buffalo in the 2024-25 season but became indispensable with the Rochester Americans, going 45GP 19G 17A 36pts. However, last season he made the step up and scored 3G and 7A in ten games for the Amerks, but spent the majority of the time with the Sabres playing in 60 games, with 11G and 16A for 27 points in all. It was in the playoffs though that he made the biggest impression, and irreversibly turned the series against the Boston Bruins in the Sabres favor in just three games before he went out injured. Calgary, Alta. — Ninety-one Western Hockey League players have been invited to attend 2026-27 NHL rookie camps and showcases across North America. All 23 WHL clubs will be represented. The 2025 WHL Champion Medicine Hat Tigers lead the way with eight players earning invites, including last season's top two scorers and 2026 Pittsburgh Penguins picks Liam and Markus Ruck and incoming Calgary Flames defensive prospect Mace'o Phillips.
