T McGee’s Quick NHL Draft Recap -
DBTB –  I’m back from the Draft in scenic BFLO.  A few thoughts that popped into my head during the weekend:  – If any of you ever get the chance to go to the Draft, you should go.  It is a life-affirming experience.  You’re sitting among the aspiring draftees, their families, friends and coaches, watching people have their dreams fulfilled right in front of you.  Really amazing to be a part of.  And really supportive.  Fans, some of whom have probably never heard of these kids, giving them high-fives and encouraging them.  Really cool.   – Daxon Rudolph is a guy who I had on my Board at #9.  I think if he can get a little quicker and play with more consistent physicality (probably get stronger), he can be a really good #3.  I’ve watched some more of his shifts since they chose him and there’s one guy he reminds me of..,this will be weird…but I think Sergei Zubov when I watch him.  Everything seems so easy that he doesn’t alw

Winnipeg Jets: Free Agency Outlook -
Well, the start of the National Hockey League’s free agency period kicks off on Canada Day at 11 am Central….but as Winnipeg Jets’ fans, we all know based on past experience not to expect a bunch of big signings for our club on July 1st. That is the reality of the situation for one of the NHL’s smallest and coldest markets…players are just not lining up to come to Manitoba. Even when the True Northers were doing very well and on way to a Presidents’ Trophy, the Jets were still not a prime destination. As GM Kevin Cheveldayoff prepares for the 2026-27 campaign, his club is coming off their worst season since 2015-16 and that probably will even reduce the already limited number of players who may want to sign here as a free agent. Although….it is not like there are tons of great options at the top of the UFA pool anyways:

Buffalo Sabresin suomalainen GM toimi viikonlopun draftissa niin, että osa oman joukkueen faneista järkyttyi. Lätkäpodin tuoreessa jaksossa palattiin NHL:n viime viikonlopun varaustilaisuuteen.

Sabres ink Malenstyn to new long-term deal -
Malengoat stays! Free agency week started with the Buffalo Sabres locking up a key piece of the bottom six to a new six-year deal with Beck Malenstyn signing a new contract for $17.5 million, which works out to an AAV of $2.9167M. As a key piece of the Sabres fourth line, the fast-skating hard-hitting forward featured in 81 regular season games, scoring 7 goals and 7 assists averaging 11:15 a night with 38 PIM and a 40% faceoff win percentage. He added to that with 1 goal and 2 assists in 13 playoff games playing 10:30 a game. The new deal marks more than double his previous contract at 2x $1.35M, but it’s a well-earned raise given how essential he has been to the Sabres forward corps. Buffalo Sabres Open Thread, Wk of 6/29 -
The NHL Draft has come and gone and the Buffalo Sabres have certainly been busy retooling the roster given there were some expiring contracts and players entering pivotal final seasons of their current deals. This week will see the opening of NHL Free Agency, starting at 12:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday July 1. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, any contact or contract negotiation between NHL teams and pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs) is strictly prohibited prior to the official opening, even though every year we see prior discussions all the time. Between contract extensions, early trades, NMCs and NTCs, this has led to a pretty weak free agent market, but that should not dissuade aggressive General Managers from making moves. We’ll have a tracker going here on DBTB to update the latest signings on Wednesday.

Sharks re-sign Ostapchuk, Kesselring -
Lost in the mix of an excellent draft weekend was General Manager Mike Grier getting some key pieces of business done. The San Jose Sharks announced on Saturday that the team signed restricted free agent Zack Ostapchuk to a four-year extension. The next day, restricted free agent Michael Kesselring signed a three-year extension of his own. Locking up a fourth-line center and a mid- to bottom-pairing defenseman for the next few years is tidy work for the general manager after pulling off such an immensely successful day one of the draft. What Ostapchuk’s deal indicates Ostapchuk’s four-year contract is for $2.35 million per season. With the cap going up for the foreseeable future, that means the Sharks have a very reasonably priced fourth-line center locked in and plenty of room to make sure centerpieces Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, Michael Misa and Sam Dickinson get the proper extensions they deserve. Buffalo was significantly quieter on day two of the draft. Due to their various trades, they only picked three times in rounds 2-7. 2026 NHL Draft – How To Watch, Draft Order & Rounds 2-7 Open Thread -
With the 2026 NHL Draft being held in Buffalo, there was much anticipation about what new General Manager Jarmo Kekäläinen would do, and if you are a fan of activity, you certainly got some. The Sabres picked up 2022-23 Canadian Hockey League Defenseman of the Year Olen Zellweger from the Anaheim Ducks for forward Anton Wahlberg and a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft (just acquired from Chicago). They followed that up with the selections of offensive-minded defenseman Daxon Rudolph at #4, and Russian center Ilia Morozov at #20, both high floor prospects even if they are not big swings for the fences. The Sabres currently hold these remaining picks: Round 4, 124th overall Round 5, 156th overall Round 6, 188th overall Jarmo’s Day 1 Recap “I was fortunate that I always worked with a general manager that didn’t stick his fingers in the process,” Kekäläinen said ab

Watch-Along Party 2026 NHL Draft -
Sabres Surprisingly Hold the 4th Overall Pick After Byram Trade 2026 NHL Draft – Buffalo, New York – Keybank Center The Buffalo Sabres are used to having high draft picks after 14 years of no playoffs. It seems only fitting they have another despite winning the Atlantic Division Title this season. The Blue and Gold can make a high draft selection where there is some really strong talent. Right shot defenders Chase Reid and Keaton Verhoeff could both be available. Daxon Rudolph and Carson Carels are two other possibilities in a strong draft for defensemen. Forwards Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg look to go first and second but center Caleb Malhotra is another option. That is, should the Sabres keep the pick. Buffalo is still in the market for a top-six forward after the departure of Alex Tuch. The team has also shown interest in adding a number one center. Either of those asks are likely to involve that pick. The Sabres are a

Day One Draft Recap For the Sabres -
Buffalo Makes an Early Splash But No Deals Get Done During the Event 2026 NHL Draft – Buffalo, New York – Keybank Center The Buffalo Sabres were active before the draft was even officially underway. In an afternoon trade, GM Jarmo Kekäläinen acquired young defenseman Olen Zellweger from the Anaheim Ducks. In exchange, Buffalo sent forward Anton Wahlberg and a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft (just acquired from Chicago) to Anaheim. Zellweger is just 22 but already has parts of three NHL seasons under his belt. He scored 22 points in 76 games last year and is ranked as one of the speediest Dmen in the league. That is something the fast-paced Sabres surely like. He is another left shot defender at just 5’10” and 190 pounds but he has near elete quickness and can regularly find the open man on the ice. His defensive analytics were pretty good last season too, I think this is somebody head coach Lindy Ruff can work with. This is also
