A new approach to analyzing the Montreal Canadiens’ penalty kill -
Following the departure of key defensive players David Savard, Joel Armia, and Christian Dvorak during the 2025 off-season, the Montreal Canadiens looked to be trying to implement a new penalty-killing system last year. Results, diplomatically speaking, were mixed (with Eyes On The Prize’s own Matt Drake being very outspoken about this subject on the Bottom Six Minutes podcast during the season). In order to take the next steps, to get home ice advantage in a tougher Atlantic Division and a better shot at the Stanley Cup, it is the penalty kill that needs to improve the most. What the Canadiens tried to implement last season felt familiar to what Rögle BK attempted during Adam Engström’s two seasons of development with the club. I reached out to Max Bohlin, Rögle’s defensive coach and main developer of Engström at the SHL level. Bohlin first introduced the system when he joined Rögle’s senior squad, and we first spoke about what he did during the 2024-25 campaign

The trade negotiations went deep enough that Hellebuyck waived his no-movement clause to join the Sabres, though the trade never crossed the finish line. But there’s another skater on the roster who could see his game really elevate in the coming season — and he could be a huge piece for the Blackhawks’ emergence from the cellar. Alex Vlasic, who enters the 2026-27 season as the longest-tenured defenseman on the Blackhawks’ roster, could be an important break out player in Chicago this year.

Dylan Larkin who is a rumoured trade target given that he wants out of Detroit is 20th on this list. Also interesting is that Robert Thomas, who the Sabres were looking to trade for, is not on the list at all. Your question for the week is a good one – If you could bring back one former Sabre in his prime to join the current roster, who would it be?

When we spoke with the Blackhawks in their exit interviews following the conclusion of the 2025-26 regular season, defenseman Alex Vlasic was one of the more outspoken players. He emphatically put his flag in the ground that playoffs should be the expectation for the Blackhawks when the dust settles in 2027, which raised some eyebrows (and got some sarcastic, doubtful comments in the replies). Vlasic spoke with Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times recently and doubled down on his statement. ‘‘If you’re scared to use that word, it isn’t a good thing

Dominik Hasek Warned Us About Igor Shesterkin...And Everyone Thought He Was Crazy -
Dominik Hasek changed NHL goaltending forever. Decades later, Igor Shesterkin began following a path so eerily similar that one respected hockey analyst finally said what everyone else seemed afraid to admit: Shesterkin might be the closest thing the NHL has seen to Dominik Hasek. But this story goes far beyond a simple comparison. From Hasek’s overlooked beginnings with the Chicago Blackhawks to his legendary years with the Buffalo Sabres, six Vezina Trophies, two Hart Trophies, and unforgettable gold-medal performance at the 1998 Winter Olympics, we examine how “The Dominator” created a blueprint that would eventually reappear inside the New York Rangers’ crease. Igor Shesterkin’s extraordinary reflexes, fearless improvisation, and ability to steal games have drawn comparisons to one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. But the similarities between Hasek and Shesterkin extend beyond spectacular saves. Their journeys, expectations, playoff pressure, and the challenge of carr

The Buffalo Sabres finally broke their 15-year playoff drought last season, finishing strong despite a rocky start. After climbing to the top of the Atlantic Division, they clinched a playoff spot and won a first-round series against the Boston Bruins, signaling potential at long last. However, key offseason departures, including Alex Tuch, have raised questions about their ability to replicate past success. Key additions like Olen Zellweger aim to shore up the roster, but concerns about their depth and defensive struggles remain. The overarching question is whether last season was a turning point or an isolated success.

Let’s open our Friday with some more discussion about the current Blackhawks issue of perception vs. reality. Yesterday, I shared my thoughts on the league-wide front office confidence poll at The Athletic. In that, I was fairly critical of the macro discourse surrounding the franchise; the Hawks are far from a rudderless ship, though many national/league-wide writers paint it as such. In thinking about the results of that poll, I was mindful of another poll at the same outlet. Earlier in the month, Scott Powers and Mark Lazerus did a poll that, based on their beat, targeted Blackhawks fans specifically. I wrote about

The Coffee Empire Built on an NHL Tragedy Before Tim Horton became one of the most recognizable names in coffee, he was one of the toughest and most respected defensemen in NHL history. A four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Horton survived brutal injuries, played through pain, and built a business on the side because hockey in his era offered little financial security. But on February 21, 1974, everything changed. At just 44 years old, Tim Horton was killed after losing control of his De Tomaso Pantera on the Queen Elizabeth Way near St. Catharines, Ontario. When Horton died, the Tim Hortons business had only around 40 locations. His widow, Lori Horton, later sold her stake and the rights connected to Tim's name to business partner Ron Joyce. Buffalo Sabres on luopunut venäläislupaus Stiven Sardarianin oikeuksista. Buffalo pystyi […]

Hurricanes Acquire Stiven Sardarian from Sabres for Future Prospects -
The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired the signing rights of forward Stiven Sardarian from the Buffalo Sabres for future considerations. He was projected to become an unrestricted free agent, but complications arose because he did not inform the NHL Central Registry about his eligibility, leaving him in contractual limbo. Sardarian, once a promising prospect with significant collegiate achievements at Michigan Tech, is expected to sign with the Hurricanes soon.

When the Chicago Blackhawks drafted an undersized, overage Andrew Shaw in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, there wasn’t a lot of thought about him becoming an important part of two Stanley Cup championship teams and a fan favorite. You usually don’t find those guys falling to the 139th overall selection. But Shaw became that guy, authoring some iconic moments that included a header and loving shin pads. 2 Flyers prospects who could be the next call-ups to make an impact -
Two weeks before Christmas last year, the Flyers were in a bit of a mini-funk. It wasn’t huge, as they had a three-game winless streak. But had three loser points over that time. A 4-1 win over Montreal snapped the quasi-slump on Dec. 16. Philadelphia then lost 5-3 to the Sabres, meaning they had lost four of their previous five. The timing wasn’t great, as Tyson Foerster was at the time considered lost for the season. The team needed a spark plug, something to change the dynamic of the roster. It was seen more as a stopgap measure, but on Dec. 19 the Flyers opted to call up winger Denver Barkey from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. To say it was a surprise was an understatement. Barkey wasn’t supposed to move the needle that much, but his first game with against the Rangers

Buffalo Sabresin on huhuttu tavoittelevan Winnipeg Jetsin tähtimaalivahti Connor Hellebuyckia, mutta mahdollinen jättikauppa näyttää ajautuneen pattitilanteeseen. Buffalo Sabres yrittää vahvistaa joukkuettaan onnistuneen viime kauden jälkeen. Sabres voitti Atlantic-divisioonan, palasi pudotuspeleihin ensimmäistä kertaa sitten vuoden 2011 ja eteni aina Stanley Cupin pudotuspelien toiselle kierrokselle.
