Saturday Florida Panthers Offseason Caterwaul -
In Sportsnet’s One player who has to deliver for every Atlantic Division team writer Ryan Dixon tabbed Jacob Markstrom has the man who has to come through for the Florida Panthers. Look around the Cats lineup and, even for a team coming off a horrendous injury-filled season, there are a lot of sure things. You can’t say that about the crease. The one prominent UFA to leave the championship nest in the past few summers was goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, for whom the Cats obviously didn’t want to shell out too much money. Now, another veteran stopper — albeit a less accomplished one — is tasked with providing Cup-level goaltending to a team that will settle for nothing less than a third title in four seasons. The 36-year-old Markstrom, originally a second-round pick of the Panthers back in 2008, had a

2027 NHL Mock Draft – First Round -
DBTB – Here we go, my fellow Sabre fans…as the school year gets underway, another Draft year has come! Now, I know we’re all focused on things like the Buffalo Sabres replicating last year’s performance, or even exceeding it, and things like Connor Hellebuyck or Kirill Marchenko joining the club. No one is thinking much about the Draft at this point in time. That’s cool.  Still, as we discovered this off-season, one never knows how things will transpire on Draft Day. I certainly never envisioned the Sabres selecting at #4 and at #20 in the first round, but…that’s exactly what happened. Kanadan maajoukkueen superlupausta odotti NHL-ura – tilanne muuttui dramaattisesti -
Kanadan alle 17-vuotiaiden jääkiekkomaajoukkueen riveissä kovaa jälkeä tehnyt laitahyökkääjä Oliver Nadeau pelasi vakuuttavan junioriuran. Nadeau takoi hurjia tehoja QMJHL:ssä Shawinigan Cataractesin ja Gatineau Olympiquesin riveissä saaden varauksen Buffalo Sabresiin kesällä 2021. Sabres varasi 23-vuotiaan oikealta laukovan laitahyökkääjän neljännellä kierroksella suurten odotusten kera, olihan ura QMJHL:ssä tuottanut neljällä kaudella parhaimmillaan 78 tehopistettä yhdellä kaudella. Former Sabres prospects have found new jobs all over this summer -
For a while, former Buffalo Sabres defense prospect Nikita Novikov looked like a steal as he quickly adapted to North American hockey. Not only did the Russian generate offense without the benefit of power-play time, he led the Rochester Americans in plus-minus – gaudy ratings of 20 and 28, respectively – in each of his first two seasons. Novikov, a sixth-round pick in 2021, 188th overall, appeared to be on track to at least earn ... Danny Briere explains why the Flyers never did a full teardown rebuild -
The most divisive thing within the Philadelphia Flyers fan base is whether or not this current rebuilding plan is going to work. Instead of going with the typical rebuild in the NHL, where a team trades just about everything valuable on their team or any player over the age of 25, to then absolutely suck for at least three or four seasons, draft very high to get elite prospects and then build their new team around that, the Flyers did something much more unorthodox. The Flyers decided to keep their team largely in-tact and the front office led by Danny Briere decided to do more trimming around the edges. There was a fair amount of rebuilding trades — moving Ivan Provorov, trading Sean Walker when the team was in the playoff mix, and the Scott Laughton trade are the obvious ones ̵

A new approach to analyzing the Montreal Canadiens’ penalty kill -
Following the departure of key defensive players David Savard, Joel Armia, and Christian Dvorak during the 2025 off-season, the Montreal Canadiens looked to be trying to implement a new penalty-killing system last year. Results, diplomatically speaking, were mixed (with Eyes On The Prize’s own Matt Drake being very outspoken about this subject on the Bottom Six Minutes podcast during the season). In order to take the next steps, to get home ice advantage in a tougher Atlantic Division and a better shot at the Stanley Cup, it is the penalty kill that needs to improve the most. What the Canadiens tried to implement last season felt familiar to what Rögle BK attempted during Adam Engström’s two seasons of development with the club. I reached out to Max Bohlin, Rögle’s defensive coach and main developer of Engström at the SHL level. Bohlin first introduced the system when he joined Rögle’s senior squad, and we first spoke about what he did during the 2024-25 campaign

Alex Vlasic: The Blackhawks’ Break Out Candidate This Season -
Looking ahead to the 2026-27 season, there’s been some chatter on the socials and interwebs about potential break out candidates on the Blackhawks this season. A lot of the talk has been about some of the young forwards taking a step forward or one of the two young right-handed defensemen, Artyom Levshunov and Sam Rinzel, finding his groove in the NHL (maybe both?). But there’s another skater on the roster who could see his game really elevate in the coming season — and he could be a huge piece for the Blackhawks’ emergence from the cellar. Alex Vlasic, who enters the 2026-27 season as the longest-tenured defenseman on the Blackhawks’ roster, could be an important break out player in Chicago this year.

Buffalo Sabres Open Thread, Wk of 8/24 -
Still in the doldrums of the summer, though things will start picking up in the next week or so with Labor Day coming up and the kids going back to school, which then tells us that fall is edging ever closer. Tage Thompson made the list of NHL Network’s top 20 centers, albeit not too high on that list coming in at #19. Dylan Larkin who is a rumoured trade target given that he wants out of Detroit is 20th on this list. Also interesting is that Robert Thomas, who the Sabres were looking to trade for, is not on the list at all. Your question for the week is a good one – If you could bring back one former Sabre in his prime to join the current roster, who would it be?

Dominik Hasek Warned Us About Igor Shesterkin...And Everyone Thought He Was Crazy -
Dominik Hasek changed NHL goaltending forever. Decades later, Igor Shesterkin began following a path so eerily similar that one respected hockey analyst finally said what everyone else seemed afraid to admit: Shesterkin might be the closest thing the NHL has seen to Dominik Hasek. But this story goes far beyond a simple comparison. From Hasek’s overlooked beginnings with the Chicago Blackhawks to his legendary years with the Buffalo Sabres, six Vezina Trophies, two Hart Trophies, and unforgettable gold-medal performance at the 1998 Winter Olympics, we examine how “The Dominator” created a blueprint that would eventually reappear inside the New York Rangers’ crease. Igor Shesterkin’s extraordinary reflexes, fearless improvisation, and ability to steal games have drawn comparisons to one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. But the similarities between Hasek and Shesterkin extend beyond spectacular saves. Their journeys, expectations, playoff pressure, and the challenge of carr

Perception vs. Reality, Fantasy Keepers, Pavelski Joins the Badgers, and Other Blackhawks Bullets -
Let’s open our Friday with some more discussion about the current Blackhawks issue of perception vs. reality. Yesterday, I shared my thoughts on the league-wide front office confidence poll at The Athletic. In that, I was fairly critical of the macro discourse surrounding the franchise; the Hawks are far from a rudderless ship, though many national/league-wide writers paint it as such. In thinking about the results of that poll, I was mindful of another poll at the same outlet. Earlier in the month, Scott Powers and Mark Lazerus did a poll that, based on their beat, targeted Blackhawks fans specifically. I wrote about

The Coffee Empire Built on an NHL Tragedy -
The Coffee Empire Built on an NHL Tragedy Before Tim Horton became one of the most recognizable names in coffee, he was one of the toughest and most respected defensemen in NHL history. A four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Horton survived brutal injuries, played through pain, and built a business on the side because hockey in his era offered little financial security. But on February 21, 1974, everything changed. At just 44 years old, Tim Horton was killed after losing control of his De Tomaso Pantera on the Queen Elizabeth Way near St. Catharines, Ontario. The sports car had been part of the deal that convinced the aging Buffalo Sabres defenseman to return for one more NHL season. What makes the story even more haunting is what happened afterward. When Horton died, the Tim Hortons business had only around 40 locations. His widow, Lori Horton, later sold her stake and the rights connected to Tim's name to business partner Ron Joyce.
