Suomen maajoukkueen kanssa Sveitsissä pelatuissa jääkiekon MM-kisoissa kultaa voittanut Olli Määttä joutui menneellä NHL-kaudella pelaajakaupan kohteeksi. Määttä aloitti kauden Utah Mammothin riveissä, mutta siirtyi Milano Cortinan olympialaisten jälkeen Calgary Flamesin riveihin. Alkukausi meni Andre Tourignyn valmentaman Mammothin riveissä varsin mollivoittoisesti, sillä 22 otteluun suomalaisveteraani keräsi vain yhden syöttöpisteen. 21 otteluun Ryan Huskan valmentaman Flamesin riveissä […]

How Would The Jets Handle An Expansion Draft Next Summer? -
I recently read an article by The Athletic that projected who each National Hockey League team would protect if an expansion draft took place after the 2026-27 season is in the books. With all the talk of the league seriously considering expanding to places like Houston and Atlanta, amongst others, I guess the hockey writers are thinking about what things would look like if those rumours quickly turned into action. With the league at a nice round number like 32 franchises, it would make sense to consider trying to add a couple new clubs….so maybe both of those cities could find a way into the NHL? It seems like The Athletic followed the rules from the NHL’s most recent expansion to make their protection lists, so lets remind ourselves what those were:

Blackhawks History: Expansion Draft Losses -
With the NHL continuing to talk about expansion, the Blackhawks might need to start considering who they might protect in a future expansion draft. As talks progress around potential ownership groups in Texas and potentially Atlanta, Arizona or Quebec, the Blackhawks are still trying to build the core of a competitive team. That won’t make things easy if/when the time comes to decide which players are deemed “untouchable.” Which brings us to today’s Blackhawks history lesson. Since the Gary Bettman-led NHL started to aggressively expand 35 years ago, the Blackhawks have been forced to make similar choices. There have been some tough decisions made. And, in one instance, there was a crazy game played with a goaltender in net for Chicago who wouldn’t appear in another NHL game.
