It’s been a while since the Blackhawks last saw the Devils — all the way back in mid-November — and the version of this team now feels pretty different from the one that was still hovering around the playoff picture at the time. The Devils spent the first couple of months flirting with relevance in the Eastern Conference race but they never quite found another gear, and they’ve been on the outside looking in since before the Olympic break. Lately, they’ve been respectable enough, going 6-4-0 in their last 10 games, but that kind of stretch doesn’t move the needle much when you’re chasing in a loaded East and with the team sitting nine points back from the final wild card spot. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they could find a good singer in Nashville, but the anthems tonight were quite pleasant to listen to. First period After 16 shots against on Tuesday and 13 on Thursday, what can the Canadiens do in this opening period? The first line gets stuck in its own zone (maybe more fitting to say the top pairing did), but the second one gets some zone time and a shot. A better job from the top line on the next shift when Nick Suzuki knocks the puck out of mid-air and sends Juraj Slafkovský in a breakaway. Slafkovský tries to shoot against the direction he’s heading across the crease, but Juuse Saros makes the glove save. Two more scoring for the second line following an Ivan Demidov takeaway in the neutral zone. Nikolaj Ehlers, the hottest goal-scorer for the Hurricanes, tries to send a pass to Seth Jarvis at the top of the crease, but instead Mike Matheson deflects the puck behind Jakub Dobeš in his attempt to cut off the pass. The puck gets behind Lane Hutson and Taylor Hall turns it into a breakaway. Dobeš comes up with an important save to keep the deficit from growing. It’s all Carolina in the opening minutes.
