The Florida Panthers selected forward Vilho Vanhatalo in the sixth round (168th overall) of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft held at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NY. This feisty Finn spent the majority of the 2025-26 season anchoring Tappara’s U20 team in the SM-sarja, where he posted 10 goals and nine assists while racking up 43 PIM in 38 games. Thinking about the Blackhawks roster heading into the new season, my mind wandered to the penalty kill. Last year, the Hawks had one of the top units in the NHL; they were the best in the league before the trade deadline. I think we can safely assume the first two defensemen over the boards on the PK will be Alex Vlasic and Ian Cole this season. But, looking beyond those two, there are some questions. Wyatt Kaiser will likely see an increased role. But who will be the fourth defenseman killing penalties? Last year in Buffalo, Bowen Byram spent almost the same total ice time killing penalties (133:06 — 1:37 per game) as he did on the power play (131:02 — 1:36 per game). Assuming he’ll be part of the Blackhawks’ top power play unit, Chicago’s coaches may look at backing him off the penalty kill. And, considering Vlasic, Cole and Kaiser are all left-handed, there might be an opp
