The Chicago Blackhawks kick off a back-to-back set Thursday night, continuing their East Coast swing with a stop in Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. Like the New York Islanders on Tuesday, it’s been since late December that the Blackhawks last faced the Flyers, but it’s been more of a downhill slide for the team from Philly over the past few months. Back when the two teams faced off before Christmas, the Flyers were sitting second in the Metropolitan Division and in the Eastern Conference but are currently sitting five points out of the playoff spot. With only 12 games left and several teams clustered around the same point pace battling for the final playoff spots, it feels like a tall order for the Flyers to scrap their way in — especially when they haven’t been successful much as home lately. The Flyers are now just 2-8-4 in last 14 home games… they have won 7 straight on the road.

The AHL’s Cleveland Monsters announced that they have signed forward Owen Griffin to an amateur tryout (ATO) contract. In 66 appearances for the Oshawa Generals this season, Griffin posted a team high 67 points (25-42-67) with 54 penalty minutes. A 5’11”, 170 lb. right-shooting native of Markham, ON, Griffin, 18, was selected by Columbus in the fifth round (160th overall) of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. In 189 career OHL appearances for Oshawa spanning parts of three seasons from 2023-26, Griffin registered 48-76-124 with 100 penalty minutes.

First period Josh Anderson is back in the lineup, but his first shift doesn’t last very long as he gets sent off for interference a second after Phillip Danault won a defensive-zone faceoff. Nikolaj Ehlers, the hottest goal-scorer for the Hurricanes, tries to send a pass to Seth Jarvis at the top of the crease, but instead Mike Matheson deflects the puck behind Jakub Dobeš in his attempt to cut off the pass. The puck gets behind Lane Hutson and Taylor Hall turns it into a breakaway. Dobeš comes up with an important save to keep the deficit from growing. It’s all Carolina in the opening minutes. Now the Canadiens are getting into the offensive zone but can’t work the puck off the boards. One step at a time I suppose. Matheson has his stick ripped out of his hands on a Hurricanes zone entry.
