He carries a $5 million AAV with only two years remaining before free agency, and Washington is tight against the salary cap. This couldn't simply be a one-for-one swap. Anton Johansson May Cause Uncomfortable Conversations for the Red Wings -
It’s the second consecutive preseason where the youth of the Red Wings is starting to make a serious push to join the big club full time. Last year it was the three-headed monster of Emmitt Finnie, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin-Pellikka seizing roster spots out of the preseason. Now, with each of those names poised for bigger roles, it’s Anton Johansson who has shown out to try and steal a roster spot out of nowhere. In a vacuum, this probably shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Anton Johansson is a big, mobile defenseman who has no problem roughing it up and chipping in on offense. After another steady season with Leksands IF in the SHL, Anton Johansson made his way to Grand Rapids, where he put up 6 points in 8 games while holding it down defensively. Besides, big right-shot defenseman who are comfortable playing against men making the NHL is nothing new.

The Sabres are coming off an impressive but costly win over Columbus on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center. The team lost two defensemen in Mattias Samuelsson and newcomer Olen Zellweger. Samuelsson suffered a lower-body injury, likely while blocking a shot, and his prognosis is week-to-week. That’s certainly not what you want to see with the official first puck drop of the season right around the corner. Rasmus Dahlin’s defensive partner will now be out for at least a handful of games, maybe more. To add insult to yet another injury, Zellweger will miss at least a week, and potentially longer, with a concussion. Olen was having himself a nice preseason game until he was leveled by a “regular-season” type of hit in the second period while setting up a teammate. Well wishes to both players.
