The crafty Cats are headed to the mines. The first-place Wildcats and the upstart Foreurs get set to clash in their best-of-seven Quarter-Final series starting on Friday night, in Moncton. The Wildcats enter round two in familiar territory; with yet another extended winning streak. This latest one currently sits at 13 games following the club’s first round sweep of its provincial rival Saint John Sea Dogs. Leading the way was one of the newest Cats, Gavin Cornforth. Signed by Moncton in January, the shifty winger led the club with six goals, including a hat trick to kick off the postseason, and the winning tallies in the first two games. With six points, he also finds himself tied for the team’s overall scoring lead alongside Teddy Mutryn, Caleb Desnoyers and Tommy Bleyl. Veterans Preston Lounsbury and Gabe Smith remained their usual two-way forces as seven Cats finished the first round averaging over a point per game and all but one skater recording at least one point. A campaign of firsts will continue for the Penticton Vees. The expansion club will take on the Prince George Cougars in the second round of the 2026 WHL Playoffs. Penticton's historic 44-14-6-4 inaugural CHL season saw the Vees capture the B.C. Division title, though the Cougars weren't far behind with a 44-22-2-0 record of their own. Three decades later, he still finds himself in some of those same rinks, evaluating the next generation of potential stars with the NHL Central Scouting. It’s the latest of several stops for a guy whose resume would be shorter by simply listing any job he hasn’t held within the game. “I've touched a little bit of everything,” the 46-year-old points out. “When I retired from playing, I got the opportunity to work for the Wildcats in the business office handling marketing and game day operation. From that point, I’ve done a lot. I’ve been a goalie coach, I was involved at the Junior A level with the Dieppe Commandos as an owner, GM and coach. With only two games left per team, we only know that the Rimouski Océanic and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar have been eliminated, and that 4 of the 16 playoff spots are secured. As for the rest, nothing is decided yet! WESTERN CONFERENCE In the West, it’s confirmed: the Val-d’Or Foreurs will finish sixth, the Victoriaville Tigres seventh, and the Gatineau Olympiques eighth. At the top of the conference, the Drummondville Voltigeurs have 84 points, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 83, and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 82. All three teams can still finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd! Behind them, there’s a tight battle for fourth place between the Shawinigan Cataractes, with 72 points, and the Sherbrooke Phoenix, with 71.
