Jonny Lazarus, Arthur Staple, and Mike Rupp are back for Episode 54 of the Tri-State Hockey Podcast to debate some of the biggest questions surrounding the Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and the Metropolitan Division heading into the 2026-27 NHL season. The guys react to the NHL Network’s Top 20 defensemen rankings, including Adam Fox being left outside the top 10, Matthew Schaefer landing at No. 7, Lane Hutson’s rise, Evan Bouchard, Charlie McAvoy, and more. Then, they break down Jason Demers’ early Metro Division predictions and give their own 1-through-8 rankings, debating where the New York Rangers and Islanders stack up against the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Blackhawks Trade Tree(s) Tuesday: From Andrew Shaw to Bowen Byram -
When the Chicago Blackhawks drafted an undersized, overage Andrew Shaw in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, there wasn’t a lot of thought about him becoming an important part of two Stanley Cup championship teams and a fan favorite. You usually don’t find those guys falling to the 139th overall selection. But Shaw became that guy, authoring some iconic moments that included a header and loving shin pads. He emerged as a guy the Blackhawks needed at a time when they didn’t have a lot coming up thru the organization to help sustain their core. Shaw was eventually traded to the Canadiens, and then he became one of the guys who was brought back to the organization for a second run by Stan Bowman. That didn’t play out as well as anyone h

We’ve talked a lot about the Blackhawks’ blue line over the past few weeks here. The front office and coaches have talked about building the team from the back forward. Kyle Davidson used a couple first-round picks on Sam Rinzel and then Artyom Levshunov to be big pieces on the back, but the group was so young after the trade deadline there were viable concerns about the makeup. Which is why Davidson added Bowen Byram and Ian Cole this summer. In those two, the Blackhawks added unique skills to their defensive group and championship experience; Byram (one) and Cole (two) have ring(s) at home. In thinking about the value those two will add to the Blackhawks this year, I went back to

Flyers reportedly interested in Alexander Romanov amid trade talks -
This summer the Flyers have been tied to a number of different defensemen. The two topping the list were John Carlson and Darnell Nurse, both of which Philadelphia general manager Danny Briere was hoping to land in free agency. As well all know Carlson signed with Tampa Bay, while Nurse ended up with the Sharks. So Briere came up empty-handed. Also, the situation with Rasmus Ristolainen — in the final year of his contract and with no plans for Briere to re-sign him — has meant Philadelphia possibly looking outside their pipeline to fill a need for a big, rugged defenseman. And a name has resurfaced yet again in New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov. According to reporter Marco D’Amico on the
