Rangers are eager to turn the page from a last-place season and get a fresh start with new faces -
There was not a lot of joy around the New York Rangers last season, when struggles at home mixed with injuries to prominent players sunk them to the bottom of the Eastern Conference. “There was probably more negative than positive that went around,” captain J.T. Miller said. Missing franchise goaltender Igor Shesterkin and No. 1 defenseman Adam Fox for periods of time exposed a lack of depth, which general manager Chris Drury endeavored to fix as part of a busy summer of changes that included acquiring goal-scoring winger Pavel Dorofeyev and defensemen Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson and trading away Vincent Trocheck.

But a little over a month ago his agent called and told him he had received an invite to the Colorado Avalanche rookie camp. All the 18-year-old native of Geneva, IL, did was show he deserved the invite. He played in a pair of games as part of a Rookie Showcase in San Jose, hitting the scoresheet in both games – a 7-2 win over Anaheim and a 6-5 shootout loss to Vegas. “I was definitely happy to get on the scoresheet,” he said after arriving back in Red Deer. “I got a couple of goals and a couple of assists. There were a lot of good plays the other guys made to get the puck to me, and I was able to execute. It was a positive experience.” Varga returned to the Rebels after the Showcase, but from all indications he made an impression. “They said I did a great jo

Maksim Sokolovskii has a big opportunity at Flyers training camp -
Training camps around the NHL are used for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s just a formality for some veterans to get on the ice in more organized fashion with their teammates, as they enter their 12th season in the league and feel the familiar rhythms of the season starting. Maybe it’s of use to some young player on the roster bubble trying to break through and get noticed. Perhaps it’s a hot prospect who is basically guaranteed a spot on the roster, but still need to show that they have room to grow to be one of the best players on this team. There’s also a slightly overlooked use for NHL training camps. The freshly drafted prospect that gets just a little taste of what it’s like to be in the big leagues, years before he will actually compete for a spot.
