Saint John Sea Dogs forward Alexis Joseph has been named assistant captain of the Canadian team set to compete in the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, which will take place from Monday, 3 Aug. to Saturday, 8 Aug. in Edmonton. The Lachenaie, QC native will assist captain Landon DuPont (Everett Silvertips, WHL). The other assistant captain will be Maddox Schultz (Regina Pats, WHL). Joseph, along with DuPont, is one of only two players in the Canadian squad to have represented Canada at the 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship. Regarded by many as one of the top prospects for the 2027 NHL Draft, he recorded 60 points, including 24 goals, in 54 games during his debut season in the QMJHL. Tommy Lafreniere The Quebec-born, B.C.-raised forward made waves with 41 goals and 36 assists for 77 points in 67 games. Five QMJHL players are among the 27 players who will take part in Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team training camp ahead of the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, set for Aug. 3-9 at Rogers Place and the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton. This group will include the top two picks in the 2025 QMJHL draft: the first overall pick, forward Alexis Joseph (Lachenaie, QC) of the Saint John Sea Dogs, and the second overall pick, Malik L’Italien (Montréal, QC) of the Halifax Mooseheads. The Newfoundland Regiment will also be well represented, with defenceman Quinn Norman (St John’s, NL) and forward Benjamin Veitch (St John’s, NL).
