How Flyers starting goalies have historically fared in their second season -
When he was signed last season, nobody could’ve fathomed how big of an impact Dan Vladar had on the Flyers. Originally considered to be competition for Sam Ersson, Vladar worked his way into a long-term extension while also making Ersson quite disposable. He was remarkable in year one. Now, that year is over and done with, and the second year is all that matters. Over their history there have been 67 Flyer goaltenders. But there have only been a select few to have essentially been the proverbial number one in their first two full seasons with the club. While not going back to the start of the franchise, we’re going to take a look at roughly the last three decades, and how these seven netminders looked in the second year of the tenure with Philadelphia. What history says about the Flyers after returning to the playoffs -
The Philadelphia Flyers missed the playoffs eight times from their inaugural season in 1967-68 through the 2011-12 season. That’s eight times in the first 44 seasons of their existence, which works out to roughly 24 per cent of the time. That means it was almost a given the Flyers were going to enter the playoffs. Since then, Philadelphia has yet to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons. After missing in 2012-13, the Flyers see-sawed over eight consecutive seasons, alternating between gett
