What a difference a year makes.At this time in 2025, the Bruins were on their way to finishing with the NHL’s fifth-worst record and missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in nine years. Fast forward to today, and the B’s have a 98.2 percent chance of reaching the postseason, per MoneyPuck.And not only are the Bruins almost guaranteed a playoff spot at this point, they look like a team that could actually do real damage in the postseason.The latest example came Tuesday night against the Dallas Stars. The score was tied 2-2 entering the third period, and then the B’s dominated with an aggressive attacking mentality and outscored the Stars 4-1 in the frame to earn a 6-3 victory and extend their win streak to four games. Every year, as the calendar slowly turns into the month of April, you start to get some real previews of what the NHL playoffs will look like. Tuesday night was one of those previews, with the Montreal Canadiens taking on a likely first-round foe in the Tampa Bay Lightning. It had all the checking and intensity of a playoff game, as the players knew how important the game could be for the final standings, on top of wanting to set the tone for a potential seven-game series to start between them in a few weeks. They’ll have one more meeting before that could potentially happen, but the Habs took this one to send a message that they’re not the same team Tampa beat back in 2021. Juraj Slafkovsky wasn’t around for that series, and if his performance last night is any indication, he’s ready to be a difference maker if he gets the chance this time. NHL Player of the Month: Cole Caufield Several Canadiens players had incredible performances in March, a month in which the team only lost five times, and four of those were to either the San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks. They played a lot of games of critical importance to the playoff race in the Eastern Conference and won every one of those games save a loss to the Detroit Red Wings. There were three legitimate candidates to claim this honour this time, but the winner is the one who led the league in a few categories. Cole Caufield has made headlines all season long for his timely goal-scoring, and no one scored more than the three game-winners he had in 14 games, tying him with five others. He sat alone atop the even-strength goals like with 10 of his 12 scored in those situations, and overall ended up one goal behind Pavel Zacha for the outright lead while playing two fewer games (and one in which he was too ill to take a regular shift).

First period This is an encouraging start from Montreal. They’re quickly moving the puck with support to get out of the defensive zone, and have gotten out to a 3-0 shot advantage in the opening couple of minutes. Jayden Struble loses body position and reaches out to give himself a boost to correct that. The referee is 20 feet away to see it and call the holding penalty. Tampa Bay uses the power play to take the lead in shots, but the game remains 0-0. That’s the type of urgency the Canadiens need to adopt. The Lightning are trying a lot of stretch passes. So far they’ve only gone for a couple of icings, but the defence will need to be mindful or players speeding down the ice. Montreal is winning puck battles, including the members of the second line who had a lot of difficulty a couple of nights ago in Raleigh, so that’s another encouraging sign. For the second time in a week, the Montreal Canadiens found themselves taking on a top team in the Eastern Conference in the form of the Carolina Hurricanes. This time, they would have to do it in Carolina’s barn, and would have to do so on very little rest, having just won a game in Nashville that started less than 24 hours prior to this one. In both games against the Hurricanes, the Habs struggled to spend much time in the offensive zone, and yet for the second time, they found a way to get a big two points despite being outplayed. The common denominator for those wins was Jakub Dobeš, who has been on an absolute tear of late, and has now stolen two wins on his team’s five-game winning streak.
