Blackhawks 0, Mammoth 6 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways -
Arvid Söderblom got the start in net for the Blackhawks. At some point, his stick got kicked to the corner of the ice and he played without it for around two minutes without successfully giving up a goal. Unfortunately, the skaters in front of him struggled to possess the puck (again) and two goals in 40 seconds late in the opening period sent Chicago to the first intermission chasing a couple. The start of the second period was a dumpster fire for Chicago. It seemed like every Blackhawks skater on the ice was doing something completely independent of the rest of the roster. There was zero chemistry, structure… maybe the only thing worse than the Hawks trying to possess the puck was ESPN’s production of the broadcast. The third period happened. The Blackhawks did not come back. Star 1: the Bus Driver At least they (physically) arrived at the rink on time.

After an unpleasant start to their season, the Hawks continues their season-opening trek out west against a team that will play its initial game of the 2026-27 season on Thursday night: the Utah Mammoth. Utah is a club on its ascension, continuing in that direction with a postseason berth last season that ended with a six-game defeat to the eventual conference champion Golden Knights in the first round. Going back to the 2021-22 season, this Utah/Arizona franchise had just 57 points but has steadily improved from 70 to 77 to 89 to 92, with plenty of reasons to believe this northward trajectory will continue. The first reason is Utah’s blossoming forward talent, spearheaded by players approaching or within their prime years. Captain Clayton Keller — who’s 28 years old — has been at a point per game in three of the last four seasons, including 88 (26 G, 62 A) in 82 last season. The 2026-27 National Hockey League season gets underway tonight, and among the 32 teams, 82 former QMJHL players will begin the season in the NHL, an increase of 11 from last year. The Pittsburgh Penguins lead the way with seven QMJHL alumni: Sidney Crosby, Gabriel D’Aigle, Samuel Girard, Ryan Graves, Hendrix Lapierre, Kristopher Letang and Oliver Okuliar. It should be noted that D’Aigle and Okuliar are currently sidelined with injuries. The New Jersey Devils follow with six. Tonight’s the final San Jose Sharks preseason game before the official season starts. The Sharks pretty much have all the roster spots set. That was done around the time that the free agency frenzy(?) wrapped up in July. But this is a chance to see how some of the younger players shape up against a somewhat NHL roster. We suspect that the Vegas Golden Knights will trot out an NHL-type of lineup since the team is at home. This will give the Sharks coaching staff a chance to see how players like Eric Pohlkamp, Luca Cagnoni and Nolan Allan (though we’re not sure if Pohlkamp or Cagnoni will play tonight.) If we’re guessing, Pohlkamp is headed back to the AHL after this game so he can play consistently. Allan will get the seventh defenseman job and time with the NHL club.
